Manchester United have confirmed that Michael Carrick will become the new manager of the club after the incredible turnaround with the club this year. Carrick was able to seal a return to the Champions League for United and helped them finish third in the Premier League. The former England midfielder has signed a contract until 2028.
Carrick took over from Ruben Amorim as the caretaker manager till the end of the season after the club decided to part ways with the Portuguese tactician after a rocky tenure. Since taking over at the club, Carrick secured wins over Manchester City, Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea. In the 16 matches since taking over, Carrick has won 11 of them, drawing three and losing just two games.
“Manchester United is delighted to announce that Michael Carrick will continue as head coach of the men’s first team, having signed a new contract which will run to 2028.”
Carrick returned to United as head coach in January and was awarded the Premier League Manager of the Month award after victories against Manchester City and Arsenal in his first two games in charge. He has overseen qualification into next season’s UEFA Champions League with 11 wins from 16 games, accumulating the highest points tally in the Premier League since his arrival,” read the statement from United.
The rumours of Carrick getting the full-time job started the moment United were able to seal their return to the Champions League. During his time at the club as a player, Carrick made 464 appearances and lifted an impressive haul of trophies, including five Premier League crowns, the FA Cup, two League Cups, the Champions League, the UEFA Europa League and the FIFA Club World Cup.
