Spanish defender Cesar Azpilicueta announced on Friday that he will retire from professional football at the end of the season, bringing an end to a decorated career spanning nearly two decades. The 36-year-old confirmed the decision through a social media statement, closing the chapter on a journey that saw him play for clubs across Spain, France and England while also representing Spain on the international stage.
Azpilicueta retires as one of the most successful defenders of his generation, particularly remembered for his trophy-laden spell with Chelsea FC, where he became a fan favourite and club captain.
“This season will be my last as a professional footballer. After so many years living my dream, I feel it’s time to start a new chapter in my life,” Azpilicueta said in a social media post. “I’m grateful for every moment, the wins, the tough losses, the challenges, and most of all, the people I’ve met and the friendships I’ve made along the way,” he added.
The veteran defender also thanked the clubs and teammates who shaped his career across Europe. “To my teammates, coaches, and every staff member at all the clubs I’ve been lucky to be part of, thank you for helping me grow as a person and a player every day,” he wrote.
“Wearing the shirts of CA Osasuna, Olympique Marseille, Chelsea FC, Atltico de Madrid, Sevilla FC, and representing my country at the biggest stages has been a true privilege. Every moment has meant so much to me,” Azpilicueta added.
Azpilicueta’s retirement marks the end of a career defined by consistency, leadership and versatility. Equally, comfortable playing as a full-back or centre-back, he earned widespread respect for his professionalism and reliability. His most successful years came at Chelsea, where he spent 11 seasons and established himself as one of the club’s modern greats.
TROPHY-LADEN CHELSEA CAREER
Azpilicueta joined Chelsea from Olympique de Marseille in 2012 and went on to make 508 appearances for the London side. During his time at Stamford Bridge, he became the first player in the club’s history to win every major trophy available.
His honours list included two Premier League titles, one FA Cup, one League Cup, one UEFA Champions League title, two UEFA Europa League trophies, one UEFA Super Cup and one FIFA Club World Cup. He also holds Chelsea’s record for the most appearances in major finals, featuring in 13 title-deciding matches for the club.
Following his departure from Chelsea in 2023, Azpilicueta joined Atletico Madrid, where he spent two seasons before moving to Sevilla FC last year. He made 16 La Liga appearances this season in what would become the final campaign of his professional career.
At the international level, Azpilicueta earned 44 caps for Spain national football team and represented the country at the 2014, 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cups.
