Mexico’s FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign got off to a winning start on Thursday night, but the biggest story for many home fans arrived midway through the second half. Seventeen-year-old Gilberto Mora stepped onto the pitch at the Estadio Azteca and instantly wrote his name into Mexican football history.
The teenage midfielder became the youngest player ever to represent Mexico at a FIFA World Cup, breaking a record that had stood untouched for nearly a century. Mora entered the match in the 65th minute as Mexico defeated South Africa 2-0 in the opening game of the tournament, marking a memorable beginning to both his World Cup journey and Mexico’s campaign on home soil.

Mexico were playing in front of a packed Estadio Azteca crowd in the first match of the expanded 48-team tournament, and head coach Javier Aguirre showed enormous faith by handing one of the country’s brightest young talents a place on football’s biggest stage.
Youngest Mexico World Cup debutants:
- Gilberto Mora – 17 years, 240 days (vs South Africa, 2026)
- Manuel Rosas – 18 years, 134 days (vs France, 1930)
- Alfredo Torres – 19 years, 16 days (vs Austria, 1954)
- Raul Arellano – 19 years, 108 days (vs France, 1954)
- Andres Guardado – 19 years, 269 days (vs Iran, 2006)
- Hugo Sanchez – 19 years, 326 days (vs Tunisia, 1978)
At 17 years and 240 days old, Mora surpassed a record held by Manuel “Chaquetas” Rosas, who represented Mexico at the inaugural World Cup in 1930 at the age of 18 years and 134 days. The mark had survived for 96 years before finally being broken on one of the biggest nights in Mexican football history.
The Club Tijuana midfielder has rapidly emerged as one of the country’s most exciting prospects over the last two seasons. His performances at club level earned him a place in the national team setup, and he has continued to justify the growing hype around his name.
WHO IS GILBERTO MORA?
Mora’s rise has been remarkably swift.
Born in Chiapas, the midfielder came through Club Tijuana’s youth academy before establishing himself in the first team at an age when most players are still competing in youth football. Despite being only 17, he has already made more than 50 senior appearances for the Liga MX side, contributing goals and assists while displaying maturity beyond his years.
His rapid development convinced Javier Aguirre to include him in Mexico’s World Cup squad despite fierce competition for places. Mora had already announced himself on the international stage earlier in 2025 when he became the youngest player ever to debut for Mexico’s senior national team.
The teenager then helped Mexico win the Gold Cup, further strengthening his reputation as one of the country’s future stars.
Mora’s rise has also attracted attention from several European clubs, with scouts closely monitoring his progress. FIFA had already highlighted him as one of the standout young talents to watch at the tournament before he even kicked a ball at the World Cup.
The youngster is also the youngest player among all participants at the FIFA World Cup 2026, underlining just how extraordinary his presence at the tournament is.
OTHER RECORDS HELD BY GILBERTO MORA
Breaking records has become a recurring theme in Mora’s young career.
Some of his notable milestones include:
- Youngest Mexican player ever to appear at a FIFA World Cup.
- Youngest player to represent Mexico’s senior national team.
- One of the youngest debutants in Liga MX history.
- Youngest player in the entire FIFA World Cup 2026 squad list.
- Gold Cup winner before turning 18.
Mora is also within touching distance of another historic achievement. Should he find the net during Mexico’s remaining World Cup matches, he would become the second-youngest goalscorer in FIFA World Cup history.
That record remains firmly in the hands of Brazilian legend Pele, who scored at the 1958 World Cup aged 17 years and 239 days before going on to win the tournament.
MEXICO MAKE PERFECT START TO WORLD CUP
While Mora’s historic appearance grabbed headlines, Mexico also delivered the result their fans desperately wanted.
The hosts defeated South Africa 2-0 in a chaotic opening match that featured three red cards and several flashpoints. Julian Quiones scored the first goal of the tournament before veteran striker Raul Jimenez added a second to secure all three points.
South Africa finished the contest with nine players after dismissals for Yaya Sithole and Themba Zwane, while Mexico defender Cesar Montes was also sent off in stoppage time. The three red cards made it the first World Cup match in history to feature three dismissals.
The evening had begun with a spectacular opening ceremony headlined by Shakira and Burna Boy before football finally took centre stage.
For Mexico, it was a night that delivered both a winning start and a glimpse into the future. Gilberto Mora may have only played 25 minutes, but those minutes were enough to secure his place in Mexican football history.
