Axed England Test captain Ben Stokes is set to make a dramatic return to competitive cricket on Friday, having been named in Durham’s squad just days after being dropped by his country following a controversial late-night incident.
Stokes, 35, was dramatically left out of the England team for the ongoing second Test against New Zealand at the Kia Oval. The extraordinary disciplinary action was taken by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) after Stokes and teammate Gus Atkinson breached a strictly enforced midnight curfew following England’s first Test victory at Lord’s. The duo became embroiled in an early-hours altercation with Saracens rugby players at a London nightclub, during which an ECB security officer was reportedly struck and required stitches.
Despite a twin ECB investigation hanging over his international future and Test captaincy, there are no structural restrictions barring Stokes from domestic cricket. Durham head coach Ryan Campbell ensured he did not miss out on the opportunity, drafting the talismanic all-rounder into a 15-player squad to face Northamptonshire in the Rothesay County Championship at the Banks Homes Riverside.
The fixture, starting at 11am on Friday, could mark Stokes’s first competitive appearance at Chester-le-Street since June 2024, when he claimed three wickets and smashed a first-innings half-century against Worcestershire.
Speaking earlier this week, Campbell offered an unequivocal message of support for the embattled superstar.
“Our doors are always open for any of our Durham boys,” Campbell said. “If Ben happens to walk through it, I will definitely be waiting there with arms open wide. Ben is a competitor, he loves to play and he wants to play. He put his hand up and said he made a mistake. From what I’ve seen, he’s in good spirits, he’s back in training, working hard, and the rest will take care of itself.”
Stokes’s return injects massive box-office appeal into what is already a high-stakes Division Two clash. Durham currently sit at the summit of the table, holding an 18-point advantage over their second-placed visitors. Northamptonshire arrive in the North East in fine form, trailing the leaders after registering three wins, three draws, and a single loss so far this season.
Campbell has named an otherwise unchanged squad for the match as Durham look to extend their unbeaten streak and solidify their promotion charge. However, all eyes at the Riverside will undeniably be fixed on Stokes.
While stand-in captain Joe Root leads a new-look England side in London, Stokes will be out to let his cricket do the talking in the calmer waters of county cricket.
