Stafanie Taylor’s explosive late cameo and Aaliyah Alleyne’s composure at the death helped the West Indies edge Scotland by seven runs in a thrilling ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 contest at Headingley. Taylor turned the innings around with an unbeaten 47 off just 19 deliveries after the West Indies had slumped to 85/5, lifting her side to a competitive 153/6.
Scotland responded bravely, with opener Darcey Carter anchoring the chase with a determined 59 despite battling cramp and surviving two dropped chances. However, Alleyne struck three times in the penultimate over, including Carter’s dismissal, to extinguish Scotland’s hopes and seal the Caribbean side’s second victory of the tournament.
TAYLOR SPARKS WINDIES RECOVERY
Asked to bat first, the West Indies made a steady start before Scotland seized control through a disciplined bowling effort.
Katherine Fraser provided the breakthrough with a superb running catch near the boundary to remove Qiana Joseph for 13. She followed it up by cleaning up captain Hayley Matthews for 14, leaving the higher-ranked West Indies searching for momentum.
Deandra Dottin’s milestone 150th T20 international ended on 14 when Sarah Bryce completed a stumping off Kathryn Bryce’s bowling.
Scotland tightened their grip further in the next over as Fraser produced a direct-hit run out to dismiss Shemaine Campbelle for 36, reducing the West Indies to 80/4. Returning from injury, Chinelle Henry managed only four before departing, bringing veteran Stafanie Taylor to the crease in her first appearance since recovering from injury.
Taylor immediately shifted the momentum. Although the West Indies reached 100 cautiously, Jahzara Claxton injected some impetus with the first six of the innings. Claxton made 16 before Fraser claimed her third wicket, with Kathryn Bryce taking a comfortable catch in the deep.
From there, Taylor dominated the closing overs, clearing the ropes three times—including off the final delivery—to finish unbeaten on 47 from only 19 balls and propel the West Indies to 153/6.
SCOTLAND FALL SHORT
Scotland began their chase positively despite facing their highest-ever target in T20 internationals.
Fraser got things moving with an early boundary before Carter took the attack to Deandra Dottin, striking three fours in one over. Carter was handed a lifeline on 19 when Qiana Joseph spilled a chance.
Hayley Matthews then swung the momentum back in the West Indies’ favour. She clean bowled Fraser for a brisk 20 before dismissing Kathryn Bryce for a duck just two deliveries later, leaving Scotland at 51/2.
Sarah Bryce was unable to make an impact either, holing out to Deandra Dottin off Afy Fletcher’s bowling. Megan McColl also enjoyed a reprieve before becoming Matthews’ third wicket after scoring only one.
Carter continued to battle despite requiring treatment for cramp, while wicketkeeper Shemaine Campbelle was forced off the field through injury and replaced by Mandy Mangru.
As the required rate climbed, Priyanaz Chatterji fell for eight, leaving Scotland under increasing pressure. Carter kept their hopes alive by ending a lengthy boundary drought and later reached her maiden Women’s T20 World Cup half-century from 53 balls.
Alongside Lancashire teammate Ailsa Lister, Carter stitched together a valuable 48-run partnership that brought Scotland back into contention.
The decisive moment came in the 19th over when Alleyne took charge. She first dismissed Carter for 59 off 68 balls with a return catch before removing Lister and then trapping Kirstie Gordon first ball, leaving Scotland’s chase in tatters.
Scotland needed 17 runs from the final over but could only manage 146/8, falling seven runs short as the West Indies held their nerve to clinch a hard-fought victory.
