Morocco took a giant step towards the FIFA World Cup knockout rounds after Ismael Saibari’s early strike secured a hard-fought 1-0 win over Scotland in their Group C clash in Boston on Friday.
The North Africans needed just 71 seconds to find the breakthrough. Brahim Diaz threaded a clever pass through the Scottish defence and Saibari burst into the box before unleashing an unstoppable finish beyond Angus Gunn. It was the PSV Eindhoven midfielder’s second goal of the tournament after also finding the net in Morocco’s opening draw against Brazil.

The early goal set the tone for a first half largely dominated by Walid Regragui’s side. Morocco pressed aggressively, controlled possession and repeatedly forced Scotland into mistakes. Achraf Hakimi and Azzedine Ounahi dictated proceedings, while Saibari constantly found pockets of space that left Steve Clarke’s men chasing shadows.
Scotland struggled to establish any rhythm and spent much of the opening 45 minutes pinned inside their own half. The Tartan Army faithful generated plenty of noise in the stands, but their side failed to translate that support into meaningful attacking moments as Morocco carried a deserved one-goal advantage into the break.

Morocco resumed after half-time with the same intensity and nearly doubled their advantage on several occasions. Hakimi continued to deliver dangerous set-pieces, while Brahim Diaz remained a constant threat running at Scotland’s backline.
The closest they came to a second goal arrived shortly after the restart. Saibari once again found space inside the box and saw his effort take a deflection before crashing against the crossbar. It was another warning sign for Scotland, who were fortunate to remain only one goal behind.
Brahim Diaz also came close after racing through on goal, only for a heavy first touch to allow Scotland a crucial escape. Time and again Morocco looked capable of finding a decisive second goal, but a combination of wasteful finishing and resilient defending kept the contest alive.
The Atlas Lions also continued to unsettle Scotland with their relentless pressing. Ryan Christie and Che Adams found little joy in possession, while Hakimi’s deliveries from wide areas repeatedly tested the Scottish defence.
TARTAN ARMY FINDS ITS VOICE
To their credit, Scotland improved significantly after the interval. The introductions of Ben Doak, Lyndon Dykes and Kenny McLean injected fresh energy into Clarke’s side, who finally began to enjoy longer spells of possession.
Ryan Christie blazed a promising effort over the bar after neat build-up involving Andy Robertson and Scott McTominay, while Dykes headed wide from a dangerous position as Scotland searched desperately for an equaliser.
The Scots pushed forward in the closing stages, knowing that even a point could prove invaluable with Brazil awaiting in their final group match. However, Morocco’s defence remained organised and composed under pressure, limiting Scotland to half-chances rather than clear opportunities.
After six minutes of stoppage time, referee Ilgiz Tantashev brought proceedings to an end, confirming a result that leaves Morocco firmly in control of their World Cup destiny.
The victory moves Morocco onto four points after two matches and puts them in an excellent position to qualify for the round of 32. Scotland remain on three points following their opening win over Haiti and now face a daunting final group encounter against five-time world champions Brazil, needing a result to keep their knockout hopes firmly in their own hands.
