France’s FIFA World Cup 2026 Group I clash against Iraq was suspended at halftime after a severe thunderstorm warning was issued in the Philadelphia area on Monday.
Tournament officials halted proceedings as the teams headed into the interval, with stadium safety protocols requiring play to be suspended due to the threat of lightning and dangerous weather conditions. Spectators in the open sections of the stadium were instructed to leave the stands and seek shelter in covered concourse areas.
The match is being played at Philadelphia Stadium, the tournament name for Lincoln Financial Field. The 68,324-capacity venue is largely uncovered, forcing most supporters in attendance to move into the concourses while they waited for further updates. It is the first match at the FIFA World Cup 2026 to be affected by severe weather, with strict safety regulations in place in the United States when storms are detected in the surrounding area.
At the time of the suspension, France led Iraq 1-0 thanks to a 14th-minute goal from captain Kylian Mbappe. The move began when Mbappe attempted to combine with Michael Olise down the right flank. Although the initial pass was blocked, the ball eventually reached Olise, who found Mbappe on the edge of the penalty area.
The France skipper shifted onto his left foot before firing a powerful shot past Iraq goalkeeper Jalal Hassan Basil, who got a fingertip to the effort but could not keep it out.
The strike was Mbappe’s 15th FIFA World Cup goal and came in his 100th international appearance for Les Bleus. France’s all-time leading scorer moved level with Brazil legend Ronaldo in third place on the tournament’s all-time scoring charts with 15 goals. The milestone came on a day when Lionel Messi overtook Miroslav Klose to become the FIFA World Cup’s outright leading goalscorer with a brace against Austria.
The Group I encounter carries significant importance for Didier Deschamps’ side, with victory set to secure France’s place in the knockout rounds of the tournament.
A FIFA official confirmed that the second half would be delayed by at least 30 minutes beyond the scheduled halftime interval. Match officials, local authorities and weather experts are continuing to monitor conditions before determining when play can safely resume.
