The Democratic Republic of Congo finally had their most recognisable supporter in the stands at the FIFA World Cup. But Michel Kuka Mboladinga’s arrival was not enough to inspire the result they wanted.
Better known as “Lumumba Vea”, Mboladinga arrived in Guadalajara, Mexico on Tuesday ahead of DR Congo’s Group K clash against Colombia. He had missed the team’s opening match of the tournament against Portugal, where the team had held Cristiano Ronaldo’s side to a draw.
WHO IS THE DR CONGO SUPER FAN?
Mboladinga rose to global prominence during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, has become famous for his unusual matchday ritual. Dressed in a jacket and tie in tribute to DR Congo’s first Prime Minister Patrice Lumumba, Mboladinga stands completely still in the stands with one arm raised – recreating a pose associated with the Congolese independence icon.
His appearance became one of the early talking points of the World Cup after travel restrictions linked to the Ebola outbreak delayed his arrival to the tournament. But while Mboladinga took his place in the stands, DR Congo were unable to produce another memorable moment on the pitch.
DR CONGO LOSE 0-1 TO COLOMBIA
Daniel Munoz scored the decisive goal in the 76th minute as Colombia edged DR Congo 1-0 and secured qualification to the Round of 32 with a game to spare.
For long periods, DR Congo frustrated one of South America’s most exciting teams.
Colombia dominated possession and repeatedly pushed forward through James Rodriguez, Luis Diaz and Jhon Arias, but goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi turned in one of the standout performances of the tournament so far.
Mpasi produced save after save to deny Colombia and briefly gave DR Congo hope of pulling off one of the shocks of the competition.
But with pressure building, Juan Quintero eventually unlocked the defence with a pass into Munoz’s run, and the defender squeezed his finish beyond Mpasi to break Congolese resistance.
The result leaves Colombia on six points and safely through to the knockout rounds alongside Portugal.
For DR Congo, the equation remains simple. Beat Uzbekistan in the final group-stage match and qualification could still remain within reach.
And if that happens, Mboladinga – standing motionless among thousands – might yet get another night to remember at this World Cup.
