England and their supporters can finally breathe a sigh of relief after Ghanaian spiritualist Nana Kwaku Bonsam claimed he has lifted a “curse” he allegedly placed on Harry Kane ahead of their Group L World Cup encounter against Ghana.
The unusual storyline gained traction after Kane missed a late chance in England’s goalless draw against Ghana in Boston, a moment that was quickly linked by some fans to Bonsam’s earlier claims. The self-proclaimed witch doctor had reportedly suggested he placed a curse on the England captain to prevent him from scoring in the fixture.
The missed opportunity sparked widespread discussion online, with Ghana supporters even celebrating the moment while referencing Bonsam’s supposed influence over the outcome of the match. The forward’s frustration in front of goal only added fuel to the viral narrative surrounding the spiritualist’s comments.
Nana Kwaku Bonsam, who has previously made controversial claims in world football — including alleging responsibility for an injury suffered by Cristiano Ronaldo ahead of the 2014 World Cup — later addressed the situation in an interview with LBC.
“Yes, yes, I lifted it yesterday,” Bonsam said when asked whether he had removed the so-called curse following the draw. “Harry Kane is not my enemy. I have a baby who I will soon name after Harry Kane because I love Harry Kane for a long time.”
His comments added another layer of intrigue to an already bizarre episode, as the spiritualist appeared to shift from rivalry to admiration for the England striker.
HARRY KANE FREE TO SCORE AGAINST PANAMA?
During the same interaction, Bonsam was also asked humorously whether he could extend similar “powers” to influence other top teams such as Spain, France or Argentina. He dismissed the suggestion with laughter, making it clear he had no intention of targeting other sides.
However, he reassured fans that Kane would no longer be affected by any such claims and would be free to perform without restriction.
“I know for sure that Harry Kane is going to play and perform very, very well in this match,” he added confidently.
The England captain, one of the most prolific forwards in world football, will now look to move past the distraction and focus on the remainder of the tournament. Despite the off-field chatter, England remain optimistic about their campaign as they prepare for the Panama challenge ahead in Group L.
While the story surrounding Bonsam and Kane has captured attention for its unusual nature, England’s camp will be more concerned with turning chances into goals on the pitch rather than narratives off it.
They face Panama on June 28 with three teams, including England, still in the hunt for the two qualifying spots.
