Netherlands forward Cody Gakpo is mourning a devastating personal loss after his partner, Noa van der Bij, announced that the couple’s unborn son had died during pregnancy. The heartbreaking news comes with Gakpo currently away on international duty as the Netherlands prepare for the FIFA World Cup knockout stage.
The 27-year-old has been one of the Netherlands’ standout performers at the tournament, helping his side top their group with two goals against Sweden. Speaking in an official statement, the Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) confirmed that Gakpo would remain with the national team after discussions with his family.
“With broken hearts, we share the devastating news that our baby boy passed away during pregnancy,” Van der Bij wrote on social media.
“Thank you for your love and support. Elijah Raphael Gakpo. Forever loved. Forever our son.”
Later, she shared another emotional message after visiting a church with the couple’s young son, Samuel.
“We went to church to light a candle. Afterward, we walked to the church playground with our son Samuel.
“There was only one other child there. His name was Elijah. There could not have been a more beautiful sign from God. He reminded us that our little boy is never far away.”
Gakpo also issued a brief statement, asking for privacy as the family deals with the tragedy.
“This is an incredibly difficult time for our family. We kindly ask for our privacy and space. Thank you for your understanding.”
The Dutch Football Association said it would continue to support the Liverpool forward during the tournament.
“We are with Cody and his family. This is a very sad private situation. Of course we knew about this and we support him in every way we can.
“Cody has decided, after talks with his girlfriend, to stay with the group. We respect their privacy and will make no further comments.”
WORLD CUP NOW CARRIES EXTRA WEIGHT
The news arrives during what had been an impressive World Cup campaign for Gakpo on the pitch.
The Liverpool forward has started all three of the Netherlands’ group-stage matches and played a crucial role in helping his side reach the knockout rounds. His brace against Sweden ensured the Dutch finished top of their group and reinforced his growing importance under Ronald Koeman.
The Netherlands will now face 2022 World Cup semi-finalists Morocco in the Round of 32, with Gakpo expected to remain part of the squad despite the immense personal tragedy.
Football, however, inevitably takes a back seat at moments like these. While the Netherlands continue their pursuit of World Cup glory, Gakpo’s thoughts will understandably be with his family as they grieve the loss of their unborn son.
The Dutch squad has rallied around one of its key players, hoping to provide support during what is undoubtedly one of the most difficult periods of his life.
