Former India assistant coach Abhishek Nayar has joined Kolkata Knight Riders, just days after getting sacked from the national team. KKR announced the news on Saturday, April 19, but did not mention what role the former batter would play in the set-up.

Nayar was rewarded with the India team role after the 2024 edition of the Indian Premier League. Nayar came into Gautam Gambhir’s support staff after a verified history of helping out players like Rohit Sharma, Dinesh Karthik, and Rinku rediscover their form at various levels of cricket.

Abhishek Nayar was sacked from the Indian team after the national side’s woeful performances in the Test format. The Indian team were handed awful losses against New Zealand and Australia in the 2024–25 season. Among the coaching staff, led by Gautam Gambhir, the Board of Control for Cricket in India decided to remove three members — Abhishek Nayar (batting coach), T Dilip (fielding coach), and Sohum Desai (strength and conditioning coach).

Among the new coaching staff, only Gautam Gambhir, Ryan ten Doeschate, and Morne Morkel remain on the coaching staff. Apart from those three, Sitanshu Kotak, who joined the Indian side ahead of the Champions Trophy, still remains with the national team. Sitanshu joined the side from the National Cricket Academy, headed by VVS Laxman.
