Former India cricketer and current head coach Gautam Gambhir has received a death threat via email, containing just three chilling words: “I kill you.” Following the threat, Gambhir filed a police complaint, prompting authorities to launch an investigation. The cyber cell is currently working to trace the origin of the email and identify the sender.

The threat comes just two days after the terror attack on tourists in Jammu & Kashmir’s Pahalgam, which took the lives of 26 people. The attack was perpetrated by the members of the Resistance Front—an offshoot of the proscribed terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT). Gambhir, in the past, has openly voiced his opinion against terrorism. Back in 2021, the former cricketer also got a similar threat from ISIS Kashmir.

On Tuesday, Gambhir also took to X (formerly Twitter) to condemn the terror attack on tourists in Pahalgam. In one of the deadliest incidents since the 2019 Pulwama strike, terrorists opened fire at tourists in the Baisaran meadow. “Praying for the families of the deceased. Those responsible for this will pay. India will strike,” Gambhir posted.

Gambhir recently returned from a family holiday in France and has been back in the country since earlier this month. He has largely stayed out of the spotlight following India’s Champions Trophy title win in March. With the Indian Premier League 2025 currently underway, national team head coaches typically get time off during the tournament. Gambhir, who took over as Team India’s head coach in July last year, succeeded World Cup-winning coach Rahul Dravid.

While Gambhir has recently enjoyed a more positive run as head coach with the Champions Trophy 2025 triumph, his early tenure was challenging. India lost the ODI series in Sri Lanka and suffered a 0-3 whitewash at home in the Test series against New Zealand. The pressure mounted further after a 1-3 series defeat in Australia, which saw India surrender the Border-Gavaskar Trophy after holding it for eight years.
