Mumbai Indians’ opening batter Rohit Sharma’s DRS call became a huge talking point following their 100-run win over Rajasthan Royals (RR) in Match 50 of the Indian Premier League 2025 (IPL 2025) on Friday, May 2 at Sawai Mansingh Stadium, Jaipur. Rohit got a reprieve on 7 after he reviewed an lbw decision at the very last second in the second over of the innings.

On the fifth ball of the over bowled by Fazalhaq Farooqui, Rohit completely missed the delivery as it crashed into his pads and was given out on the field. However, he reluctantly went for the DRS and the ball-tracking technology found the ball to be pitching just outside the leg stump, which forced the on-field umpire to change his decision and let Rohit continue his innings.

However, the decision didn’t go down well with the fans on social media, who began questioning the umpire for having a bias towards the Mumbai Indians. The replays showed 50% of the ball to be pitching outside leg stump and hence the decision had to be overturned.

In order to keep the on-field decision, more than 50% of the ball had to be pitched within the line of the stumps. Since that wasn’t the case, Rohit was given a reprieve and his innings continued.

Did Rohit opted for review in time?

Another point of discussion was the time when Rohit made the gesture of reviewing the decision. After the dismissal, a batter is given 15 seconds to choose if he wants to review the decision. If it exceeds 15 seconds, he loses the opportunity to review and has to go back to the pavilion.

In Rohit’s case, his hands began moving to gesture well within the stipulated 15-second time frame. His gesture may have been completed after the 15 seconds but since the movement of his hands started before the time ended, he was allowed to take the DRS call.

Rohit made the most of his reprieve as he ended up scoring his third half century of the season, playing an innings of 53 (36) with the help of nine fours. He got involved in a massive 116-run stand off 71 balls with Ryan Rickelton (61 off 38) which helped MI post a massive total of 217/2 in their 20 overs and win the match by 100 runs.
