Ajinkya Rahane’s retirement from all forms of cricket has left Kolkata Knight Riders with another major captaincy dilemma ahead of the next Indian Premier League season. Having appointed the veteran as captain after signing him at the auction, KKR must now identify a new leader at a time when the franchise is desperate to return to title contention.
Captaincy transitions have become a recurring theme for the three-time IPL champions, who have traditionally preferred to acquire established leaders through the auction rather than promote from within. With Rahane stepping away from the game, KKR once again find themselves searching for the right man to lead the side.
KKR’S LONG-STANDING FORMULA
Few IPL franchises have relied on the auction to solve their captaincy puzzle as consistently as Kolkata Knight Riders. Their modern success story began in 2011 when they signed Gautam Gambhir and immediately handed him the captaincy. The decision transformed KKR into one of the IPL’s most successful franchises, with Gambhir leading them to title triumphs in 2012 and 2014.
When Gambhir left to join the Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals), KKR once again looked outside their existing squad, appointing Dinesh Karthik as captain after signing him ahead of the 2018 season. Karthik guided the team to the playoffs before stepping down midway through IPL 2020, paving the way for another auction recruit, Eoin Morgan, who later captained the side to the 2021 IPL final.
The trend continued in 2022 when Shreyas Iyer was bought at the mega auction and immediately entrusted with the captaincy. Iyer repaid that faith by leading KKR to the IPL 2024 title. Following his departure, the franchise once again turned to the auction, bringing back Ajinkya Rahane and naming him captain for the 2025 season.
Rahane’s retirement now puts KKR back in familiar territory. For the fifth time in little over a decade, the franchise must identify a new captain, raising fresh questions over whether it will stick to its tried-and-tested auction strategy or finally promote a leader from within.
FEW CONVINCING OPTIONS WITHIN THE CURRENT SQUAD
If KKR decide to look within their current squad, Rinku Singh appears to be the frontrunner. One of the franchise’s longest-serving players, Rinku has evolved into a dependable match-winner and commands immense respect in the dressing room. However, he has very limited captaincy experience, making his appointment a gamble for a side looking to bounce back immediately.
Veteran all-rounder Sunil Narine is another contender. Having spent more than a decade with KKR, Narine has been at the heart of all three IPL title-winning campaigns and understands the franchise better than most. However, he is well into the second half of his career, making him an unlikely long-term captaincy solution.
Manish Pandey also brings leadership experience from domestic cricket, but he too is at the fag end of his IPL career, making him more of a short-term option than a captain around whom KKR can build for the future.
That leaves the Knight Riders with very few convincing leadership candidates. With Rahane retired, Rinku lacking captaincy experience, Narine approaching the twilight of his IPL career, and Pandey also nearing the end of his IPL journey, there is no obvious long-term successor within the squad.
History, therefore, suggests KKR could once again return to the auction to solve their captaincy puzzle.
BACK-TO-BACK DISAPPOINTING SEASONS ADD TO THE PRESSURE
The captaincy decision carries even greater significance because KKR have struggled to build on their 2024 title-winning campaign. The defending champions endured a disappointing IPL 2025, finishing outside the playoff places, before another underwhelming season in IPL 2026 saw them miss out on the knockouts once again.
For a franchise with championship ambitions, successive failures to reach the playoffs have intensified scrutiny over both the squad and its leadership. The pressure is now firmly on the KKR management to make the right appointment, with another disappointing campaign likely to leave the franchise further behind rivals that have benefited from greater continuity.
With two disappointing seasons behind them and limited in-house captaincy options, KKR face one of the most important decisions in their recent history. Whether they once again place their faith in an established leader from the auction or take a bold gamble on an internal candidate, their next captain could play a defining role in shaping the franchise’s future.
