Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and Indian businessman Amit Bhatia are closing in on a deal to become co-owners of Liverpool, with a consortium led by Bhatia set to acquire roughly a one-third stake in the Premier League club.

Fenway Sports Group (FSG), Liverpool’s owners since 2010, confirmed on Monday that it had received an approach from an investment consortium led, managed and represented by Bhatia.

“An investment consortium led, managed, and represented by Amit Bhatia has expressed interest in making a strategic minority investment in Liverpool Football Club,” FSG said in a statement.

According to Sky News, the consortium also includes Eduardo Saverin, the Facebook co-founder. Bhatia, the son-in-law of steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal, is leading the group. He was previously a shareholder in Championship club Queens Park Rangers.

The deal could be announced as early as this week, although the timeline could slip into next week, according to the report.

The proposed investment would value Liverpool at around £4.4 billion ($5.9 billion), putting the club among the most valuable football teams in the world.

FSG bought Liverpool in 2010 and has remained the club’s controlling owner despite exploring outside investment in recent years. A deal for roughly one-third of the club would give the new investors a sizeable stake while leaving FSG in control.

Bezos, whose fortune is estimated at more than $280 billion by Forbes, has previously considered investments in major American sports franchises. He explored bids for the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks and Washington Commanders but did not complete either deal.

Saverin was part of a consortium that tried to buy Chelsea in 2022, but the bid was unsuccessful.

The proposed Liverpool deal comes as American investment continues to grow across the Premier League, with US-based investors now involved with around half of the clubs in the competition.

FSG took control of Liverpool after buying the club from Tom Hicks and George Gillett in 2010. The group oversaw the club’s return to the top of English football, with Liverpool winning the Premier League title in 2020, ending a 30-year wait.

Liverpool won another league title in the 2024-25 season but are now facing a period of change following the departure of manager Arne Slot and Mohamed Salah.

Michael Edwards, who played a key role in building the squad that won the 2020 title, also left his role as FSG’s chief executive of football in July.

If completed, the investment would bring Bezos and Saverin into Liverpool’s ownership structure, with Bhatia leading the consortium, while FSG would continue to retain overall control of the club.
