The PSG juggernaut continued in world football as the Luis Enrique side won back-to-back UEFA Super Cups, beating Aston Villa 2-1 on Wednesday. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Desire Doue scored for the French side, who followed up their second straight Champions League triumph by retaining the UEFA Super Cup.
PSG took the lead in the 20th minute through a stunning strike from Kvaratskhelia, but Aston Villa hit back just before half-time through Brian Madjo. Doue restored PSG’s advantage in the 61st minute, racing onto a through ball from Ousmane Dembele before curling his shot into the far corner.
Villa thought they had avoided defeat when the offside flag went up, but a VAR check confirmed that Doue had stayed onside and awarded the goal.
PSG, who beat Tottenham Hotspur on penalties in last year’s Super Cup, held on to their lead despite Villa enjoying plenty of possession late in the game.
PSG CONTINUE DOMINANCE
The victory further underlined PSG’s remarkable run under Luis Enrique. The French club have now won back-to-back Champions League titles and followed both victories with Super Cup triumphs.
PSG have become only the third team after AC Milan and Real Madrid to retain the UEFA Super Cup.
Despite many of his players only recently returning from the World Cup, Enrique named a formidable starting XI, with nine players from the side that won the Champions League final featuring from the start.
Kvaratskhelia opened the scoring after combining with Doue before dancing past Matty Cash inside the area and firing an unstoppable effort into the net.
Villa had several chances to equalise before the break, with Madjo sending two headers wide and another effort hitting the outside of the post.
The 17-year-old eventually found the net moments before half-time. John McGinn floated a ball towards the six-yard box and Madjo, under pressure from Willian Pacho, volleyed into the roof of the net.
Madjo became the youngest-ever UEFA Super Cup scorer with his goal.
Enrique introduced Ousmane Dembele at the start of the second half and the French forward soon played a decisive role.
Doue raced onto Dembele’s through ball and produced a composed finish into the far corner, with VAR eventually overturning the initial offside decision.
Villa pushed for another equaliser in the closing stages, but PSG’s defence stood firm to secure another European trophy.
The victory was Enrique’s 13th trophy since he took charge of PSG in 2023. For Villa manager Unai Emery, meanwhile, it was another frustrating night in the UEFA Super Cup, with the Spaniard now having lost all four of his appearances in the competition.
PSG will now turn their attention to the French Super Cup, where they face Lens on Sunday.
