A new budget airline is set to launch flights from Galicia in Spain, offering tickets from as little as €21.50 (£18.40.

From December, Fly2Galicia will run services between Santiago de Compostela’s Rosalia de Castro airport in northwestern Spain and eight destinations across Europe.

Destinations include Zaragoza, Alicante, Granada, Milan, Venice, Munich, Prague and Brussels.

Fly2Galicia will not actually be operating the initial flights and instead will use one plane owned by another, unnamed, European carrier, the World Tourism Forum reports.

This is a common practice in the aviation industry, especially for startup airlines, as it avoids upfront debts by relying on leased rather than purchased aircraft.

Major airlines lease aircraft and crew, known as a “wet lease”, but it is usually done to add capacity in peak periods, cover unexpected staff shortages or test out new routes.

It is unclear whether Fly2Galicia will also be leasing crew from another European airline, but it has posted a job advertisement for its own cabin crew.

Flights on the airline’s website have gone on sale for journeys starting 1 December, with one-way fares starting at €21.50 (£18.40) and returns an additional €19 (£16.30).

The cheapest routes on the website appear to be the domestic flights between Santiago de Compostela and Alicante, Zaragoza or Granada.

For example, a return flight from Alicante to Santiago de Compostela could cost a total of €40.50 (£35) if you flew out on 12 December and returned on 14 December and chose its “Economy Go” fare, which includes an 8kg cabin bag.

Fly2Galicia is offering three more fare tiers, including Economy Plus, Economy Premium and Business Premium, which provide varying bonuses of baggage, better seats or food and drink.

Business Premium also allows passengers entry into an airport lounge, the ability to cancel their ticket and to keep the middle seat empty.

Fly2Galica says that it launched the airline as a way of addressing the need for more direct connections from Galicia to major European cities.

The flights may also offer cheaper ways home for pilgrims who complete the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage, which ends in the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela.

The airline also appears to be launching a loyalty scheme, called the Fly2Galicia Miles Programme, where passengers can earn points and redeem them on future flights.

The Independent has contacted Fly2Galicia and Spain’s airport operator Aena for further information.
