Punjab Kings batter Suryansh Shedge announced his arrival in the Indian Premier League with a defiant knock of 57 runs off just 29 balls. When Punjab had their chips down against Gujarat Titans and had lost four wickets for just 36 runs, Shedge put up a solid fight, stabilising the innings.
On Sunday, he walked out to bat with Punjab Kings in crisis. The batter took his time to stabilise the innings before cutting loose against Arshad Khan and Manav Suthar to inject much-needed acceleration.
Suryansh smashed 27 runs off Manav Suthar’s over, helping Punjab go past the 100-run mark. By the time he was dismissed in the 16th over, Punjab had reached 126 on the board.
Alongside Marcus Stoinis’ 40 off 31, Suryansh maiden IPL fifty handed Punjab a fighting total in what turned out to be a tricky pitch to bat on in Ahmedabad.
GT vs PBKS, IPL 2026: Updates | Scorecard
Bought for just Rs 30 lakh in last year’s IPL auction, Shedge has already made a name for himself in the domestic circuit. A Mumbai player, he is known for his ability to play whirlwind knocks. In 2024, the right-hander’s unbeaten 36 off just 15 balls helped Mumbai chase down 175 in the final of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
Coming off that high, Suryansh did not get many chances in the IPL before this game.
WHO IS SURYANSH SHEDGE?
Bought for his base price of Rs 30 lakh by Punjab Kings in the Indian Premier League mega auction, Suryansh Shedge is one of the most exciting young finishers to emerge from Mumbai’s domestic circuit in recent years. The right-handed batter, known for his fearless hitting and ability to accelerate instantly, has built a reputation as a specialist in high-pressure situations.
Suryansh first grabbed national attention during the 2024 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy final, where he smashed an unbeaten 36 off just 15 balls to help Mumbai chase down a target of 175. That innings underlined his biggest strength: the ability to finish games with minimal deliveries while maintaining an extraordinarily high strike rate.
In the domestic T20 season leading up to the IPL, Shedge played nine matches, scoring 131 runs at a staggering strike rate of over 250, while averaging above 40. Though the aggregate runs may not stand out at first glance, his role has been clearly defined as a finisher who comes in late and maximises impact in limited time.
A product of Mumbai’s competitive cricket ecosystem, Shedge has trained and learnt alongside some of India’s top players, including Shreyas Iyer and Suryakumar Yadav. Both have played a key role in shaping his approach to T20 batting, especially in understanding match situations and preparing through simulation-based training. Last year, Shedge revealed to India Today, that he often practices in short bursts of 12 to 15 balls in the nets to replicate real match scenarios, focusing on staying ready even after periods of inactivity in the dugout.
He has also worked closely with coach Abhishek Nayar, who helped refine his game and provided clarity about his role as a finisher. Shedge credits Nayar for adding the final touches to his batting technique and mental approach. Additionally, the youngster has drawn inspiration from senior pros like Ajinkya Rahane, particularly in maintaining composure in both success and failure.
A self-described admirer of Virat Kohli, Ben Stokes, and Hardik Pandya, Shedge models his game on players who influence matches across departments and thrive under pressure.
Coming from a middle-class family in Mumbai, Shedge’s journey has been shaped by discipline and hard work. His mother, a former banker, stepped away from her job to support his cricketing ambitions, while his father rose through the ranks in the corporate world. Grounded in those values, Shedge has repeatedly emphasised his focus on effort over rewards.
Now, with his breakthrough moment in the IPL, Suryansh Shedge has given a glimpse of his potential.
