BRIEF SCORE, DC vs CSK: Chennai Super Kings (159 for 2 in 17.3 overs) beat Delhi Capitals (155 for 7 in 20 overs) by 8 wickets in New Delhi on Tuesday.
If you wander through the streets of Chennai this week, the air isn’t just thick with the aroma of frothy filter coffee; it’s heavy with the hum of a frantic arithmetic session. The city is currently obsessed with two specific targets: 118 and 16.
Following a historic Monday that saw Vijay’s TVK emerge as the single-largest party with 108 seats, the math is simple: they need exactly 10 more to hit the magic majority of 118. Fast forward to Tuesday night in Delhi, and the Yellow Army on the pitch was doing its own heavy lifting. Chennai Super Kings’ clinical win over Delhi Capitals puts them at 10 points after 10 games, meaning they likely require at least 6 more from their remaining fixtures to secure a play-off berth. In Chennai, the whistles are blowing loud, but the crescendo will only truly arrive when the numbers finally add up.
However, unlike the political heatwave fuelled by the Whistle, signalling a new era for the state, Tuesday in Delhi offered a cool, breezy aftermath that suggested a revival. Chennai Super Kings produced a calm, collective performance on a pitch they would dearly love to uproot and take wherever they go.
IPL, DC vs CSK: UPDATES | SCORECARD
Delhi Capitals managed a measly 155 on a surface that gripped and spun from the opening delivery, failing miserably to adapt to the sluggish pace. It has been a bipolar season for the hosts at the Arun Jaitley Stadium; they have scaled the heights of 264 and plummeted to the depths of 75 all out. On Tuesday, they were caught in a frustrating limbo. It appeared as though Delhi didn’t know whether to stomp on the accelerator or hit the brakes, eventually limping to a total at least 20 runs below par.
SANJU SAMSON HAUNTS DELHI, AGAIN
In reply, Chennai Super Kings cruised home on the back of a super-composed and perfectly timed 87 not out of 52 balls from Sanju Samson. It was the second time this season the Kerala wicketkeeper-batter has haunted the Capitals, following his majestic century in the reverse fixture in Chennai. Supporting acts from youngsters Urvil Patel and Kartik Sharma ensured the Yellow Army galloped past the finish line in their chase of 156, without ever needing to shift into fifth gear, in just 17.3 overs.
Samson, fresh from a starring role in the T20 World Cup, has had a mercurial season. While he hammered two centuries in the first half of the campaign, his form has largely been ‘boom or bust’. Yet, on Tuesday, he batted with the seasoned maturity of a veteran campaigner, anchoring a chase that could have turned treacherous had he perished early. He took the onus upon himself to dismantle the Capitals’ spinners, knowing full well that allowing the likes of Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav to find their rhythm would spell disaster.
At the toss, Axar had predicted the pitch would slow down in the second innings, but a brief passing shower, which didn’t interrupt play, appeared to play a decisive hand. The moisture on the surface of the pitch ensured the Capitals’ spinners couldn’t get the ball to grip effectively, nullifying their home advantage. This was most evident in Kuldeep Yadav’s spell; usually stingy and surgical on such tracks, Kuldeep struggled for both length and line. Samson feasted on the left-armer in the third over, plundering two sixes and a boundary to ensure CSK found their stride after a couple of tentative opening overs.
He was equally ruthless against Mitchell Starc and T Natarajan in the latter stages, hurrying CSK towards the target to keep their Net Run Rate in a healthy shade of green. Samson finished with six effortless maximums and seven boundaries, never allowing the Capitals’ bowlers to dictate the tempo of the game.
KARTIK SHARMA STEPS UP
Kartik Sharma, who notched his maiden IPL fifty last week in Chennai, carried that burgeoning confidence into the capital. He played the supporting role in his 114-run partnership with Samson to perfection, providing impetus when required and rotating the strike to keep the in-form batting partner looming large. An exquisite inside-out shot that sailed over the cover boundary off Kuldeep spoke volumes of the young man’s growing stature, as he begins to justify the heavy weight of his Rs 14.2 crore price tag.
Lungi Ngidi, returning for the first time since a head injury, was the pick of a ragged Delhi attack. He struck early to remove the dangerous Ruturaj Gaikwad, but he lacked any meaningful support from the other end. While Axar remained economical and claimed the wicket of Urvil Patel during the powerplay, his spin twin endured a rare off-day precisely when the Capitals had precious little to defend.
Ultimately, Delhi Capitals lacked a ‘Samson-esque’ anchor to steer their ship. Neither KL Rahul, Nitish Rana, nor the recalled Karun Nair could provide the necessary steel. Even Captain Axar failed to fire against a disciplined Chennai attack. Axar will undoubtedly face tough questions over his decision to bat first, but in truth, his batsmen simply failed to provide the scoreboard pressure required to vindicate the call.
The defeat was Delhi Capitals’ fourth in five home matches. They have struggled to find any rhythm on a surface that refuses to settle, a challenge that has become a common theme across the league this season.
