Chennai Super Kings’ renaissance in the second half of the Indian Premier League 2026 season was brought to a screeching halt by Mitchell Marsh on Friday. Playing at Lucknow’s Ekana Stadium, Marsh’s rapid 90 off 38 balls blew away CSK and dealt a massive blow to their playoffs hopes.

CSK, who had put together a late charge for the top four spots this season, lost to Lucknow Super Giants by 7 wickets on May 15. Defending 187 runs on a pitch that offered decent assistance to the fast bowlers, CSK were left stunned by Marsh’s extraordinary assault in the powerplay.

After starting cautiously in the first couple of overs, Marsh exploded in the fifth over of the innings, smashing Anshul Kamboj for four consecutive sixes. Once he broke free, there was no stopping the Australian, who raced to his half-century in just 21 balls.

Marsh rode on the bounce at Ekana, which perhaps made him feel more at home. Cutting and pulling fast bowlers at will, Marsh dominated from word go, on a wicket where batters were troubled by short of length deliveries. CSK’s bowlers tried changing their lengths and pace, but nothing seemed to trouble the Australian during his brutal counterattack.

Marsh received solid support from Josh Inglis, who was content playing second fiddle to his compatriot. While Inglis rotated strike smartly, the partnership surged past the 100-run mark in just the eighth over of the innings.

CSK supporters were finally given some relief in the 12th over when Inglis miscued a slower ball from Mukul Choudhary. Inglis, who made 36 off 32 balls, attempted a big shot but was caught at deep cover.

CSK’s joy doubled, albeit slightly too late, when they struck twice in successive deliveries. Nicholas Pooran, facing his first ball, struck a crisp straight drive that brushed Mukul’s fingertips and crashed into the stumps at the non-striker’s end, dismissing Marsh for a sensational 90 off just 38 deliveries.

After those two back to back wickets, CSK were able to stem the flow of runs, even eke out one more wicket of Abdul Samad, but by that time, the damage had simply been done.

CSK PLAYOFFS CHANCES

The result has major consequences for CSK, who were hoping to force their way into the playoffs race. The defeat complicates their qualification chances significantly. They next face SunRisers Hyderabad and Gujarat Titans, two teams firmly in contention for the playoffs this season.

If CSK manage to win both matches and results elsewhere go in their favour, particularly involving Punjab Kings and Rajasthan Royals, they could still sneak into the playoffs.
