Rarely was a movie extra appropriately titled. This giallo-inspired, vibes-over-plot horror temper piece by German director Tilman Singer is nothing if not bonkers. It’s the type of scorching mess that grows extra incoherent the extra it tries to elucidate itself. It isn’t unenjoyable, simply so long as you favor stickily grotesque physique horror over stuff resembling story readability.

The film’s foremost property are Hunter Schafer and Dan Stevens. Euphoria actor Schafer is great as Gretchen, a sullen American teenager who, after the dying of her mom, is compelled to relocate together with her father’s new household (together with mute six-year-old Alma, performed by Mila Lieu) to a glumly down-at-heel spa resort within the German Alps. And Stevens, all the time huge enjoyable when he will get his enamel into the surroundings, is gloriously excessive as Gretchen’s dad’s new boss, Herr König, who appears to have an unhealthy curiosity within the household.

Unpick all of it and it’s pretty generic stuff, however Singer’s reward for crafting discomforting environment is properly deployed.
