  • Raina has scored just 160 runs in the 12 innings he has played so far in IPL 2021
  • Robin Uthappa is replacing Raina for his first IPL match for Chennai Super Kings
Chennai Super Kings vice-captain Suresh Raina has been ruled out of Match 50 against Delhi Capitals due to a knee injury and has been replaced by Robin Uthappa for Monday’s game, Mahendra Singh Dhoni confirmed at the toss in Dubai.

Raina has been in woefully out of form with the bat this season, scoring just 160 runs in the 11 innings he has played so far in IPL 2021. He’s managed just two double-digit scores since the league restarted in the United Arab Emirates.

But CSK decided to stick with their highest run-getter despite the repeated failures. His injury has forced the Super Kings team management to make a forced change to their playing XI with Uthappa replacing Raina for his first IPL match for Chennai.

Uthappa, who came to Chennai after spending 6 seasons at Kolkata Knight Riders, has amassed 4607 runs from 190 IPL games at 27.92 with 24 fifties and he is also the third-most successful wicketkeeper in the league behind MS Dhoni (159) and Dinesh Karthik (147) with 90 dismissals till date.

“Robin Uthappa replaces Suresh Raina, who has a back issue. We are trying to rest players who have some niggles,” Dhoni said after losing the toss.

Delhi Capitals won the toss and elected to bowl first at the Dubai International Stadium. DC have handed a debut to Ripal Patel in place of Australian Steve Smith while CSK have brought back Dwayne Bravo and Deepak Chahar along with the inclusion of Uthappa.

All-rounder Sam Curran, KM Asif and Raina miss out for the yellow brigade.
