Former LSU wide receiver Kyren Lacy was found dead early Sunday morning, April 13, in a Houston hotel room, just hours before he was scheduled to appear before a grand jury. He was 24.
Police responded to a medical emergency at a downtown hotel around 6:45 a.m. Lacy was found and pronounced dead at the scene. No signs of foul play were reported, though toxicology tests are pending as the investigation continues.
Lacy was expected to testify in connection with a hit-and-run crash that occurred in New Orleans in February. The accident left a 29-year-old pedestrian dead. While Lacy had not been charged, authorities had subpoenaed him to testify as a person of interest.
His attorney, Marcus Robichaux, confirmed his scheduled appearance but declined to comment on the case.
“It’s a tragedy,” Robichaux said Sunday. “Kyren had so much ahead of him, both personally and professionally.”
Lacy had declared for the 2025 NFL Draft following a standout season at LSU, where he led the Tigers in touchdown receptions. Known for his size, speed, and strong hands, he was projected as a late first-round pick. His performance against top SEC defenses had drawn attention from multiple NFL teams.
Tributes poured in on Sunday from around the college football world. LSU head coach Brian Kelly called Lacy “a fierce competitor and a beloved teammate.”
“Kyren had the kind of talent you can’t teach,” Kelly said in a statement. “But more importantly, he had a spirit that inspired everyone around him.”
Fans gathered outside Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge, leaving flowers and LSU gear at the gates in tribute.
Lacy, a Louisiana native, transferred to LSU from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and quickly became a key part of the Tigers’ offense.
He is survived by his parents, two younger brothers, and a close-knit group of teammates who considered him family.
The investigation into Lacy’s death remains ongoing.
