At least four people have been killed and another injured after a cable car crashed to the ground in Italy.

Officials said a cable snapped, causing the crash south of Naples, and they added that one other person remains missing.

Sixteen passengers were helped out of the cabin as it was stuck mid-air near the foot of the mountain.

They were evacuated one by one in a difficult operation using harnesses, footage on RAI public television and other media showed.

Vincenzo De Luca, head of the Campania region around Naples, told RAI that rescue operations were hampered by fog and high winds.

Umberto De Gregorio, chairman of the EAV public transport company which runs the cable car service, wrote on Facebook, calling it “a tragedy.”

Italy’s search and rescue said it was responding to the accident at Monte Faito in the town of Castellammare di Stabia.

The cable car accident took place just a week after the destination reopened for the season.

It is popular for its views of Mount Vesuvius and the Bay of Naples.
