Wasim Jaffer said that Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are not going all guns blazing, which has resulted in three losses on the trot in the Indian Premier League (IPL). After losing to the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) by 50 runs and Rajasthan Royals (RR) by six runs, the five-time champions slumped to a 25-run defeat to the Delhi Capitals (DC) on Saturday at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.

Earlier, RCB won at the Chepauk for the first time in 17 years, after which DC breached CSK’s fortress for the first time in 15 years since 2010. Against the Capitals, the Super Kings finished their innings at 158 for five after being asked to chase down a stiff target of 184.

‘Most surprising’

Jaffer said losing wickets upfront has been a huge concern for CSK. Moreover, the veteran reckoned that the Super Kings are more or less accepting defeat and aren’t even trying, especially after their big hitters, including Dube, are getting out.

“They’re losing too many wickets upfront. Whether it would be form or poor shot selection, whether it would be selection alone, and maybe throwing around too many players and those players might be feeling like, ‘I don’t know if I’m in or out,’ and that could be something we’re not used to when looking at a Chennai team. Usually, they’re stable, a good decision-making team and franchise. The team is like they’re a bit rattled at the moment,” Jaffer said on ESPNcricinfo’s Time Out show.

“If their top order doesn’t fire and Dube gets out, it looks like they shut shop very quickly. They feel really, really behind the game and it doesn’t even look like they’re trying. That approach has been the most surprising to me; it’s twice in two games, where they shut shop too early. That’s a major concern for CSK,” Jaffer added.

With their defeat against DC, the Super Kings moved down to ninth in the table with two points and a net run rate of -0.891. Their next match is against Punjab Kings (PBKS) on April 8 at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur.
