The Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) on Saturday successfully launched INSAT-3DS, a weather monitoring and disaster warning satellite.

The satellite was launched atop the GSLV-F14 rocket from Sriharikota. It will observe various atmospheric parameters and provide information related to the weather and the climate, the space agency said.

The vehicle has performed very well, and the spacecraft has been injected into the intended orbit, Isro chairman S Somanath said.
INSAT-3DS has improved capabilities over the existing weather forecasting INSAT series satellites INSAT-3D and INSAT-3DR, Somanath said.

Mission director Tomy Joseph said the GSLV has become a robust vehicle for the space agency, like the PSLV.

INSAT-3DS is designed for enhanced meteorological observations and monitoring of land and ocean surfaces for weather forecasting and disaster warning.

The primary objectives of the mission are to monitor Earth’s surface, carry out oceanic observations and its environment and provide the vertical profile of various meteorological parameters of the atmosphere. It will also aim to provide satellite-aided search and rescue services.This was the 16th flight of the GSLV. The mission is fully funded by the Ministry of Earth Sciences.

Isro’s next mission is the launch of the NISAR satellite, a joint mission with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration of the US. Short for NASA-Isro Synthetic Aperture Radar, NISAR is the first space hardware collaboration between the Indian and US agencies on an Earth-observing mission.

It is expected to observe movements from earthquakes, landslides and volcanic activity, and track dynamic changes to forests, wetlands and agricultural lands.
