Australia and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) opener Travis Head became the second fastest to complete 1000 runs in IPL history during Match 33 of the ongoing season against Mumbai Indians (MI) on Thursday, April 17 at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. The explosive batter paradoxically achieved the milestone during one of his slowest innings in the history of the tournament. Head completed 1000 runs in just 575 balls, becoming the second fastest to reach the landmark in the history of the tournament.
Andre Russell sits on the top spot, having reached the landmark in 545 balls. Head got to 1000 runs faster than Heinrich Klaasen (594 balls), Virender Sehwag (604 balls), Yusuf Pathan (617 balls) and Chris Gayle (615 balls), amongst others.
However, the opening batter didn’t have a memorable outing against MI as he couldn’t make the most of a reprieve given by Hardik Pandya, who got him out on a no ball. Head was caught at deep midwicket on 23 (23) against the MI skipper, who made the cardinal sin of overstepping the popping crease.
However, his innings was brought to an end by Will Jacks, who got him holed out at long off for 28 (29). As a result, Head registered his worst strike rate in an innings of over 20 in T20 history of 96.55, which is way lower than his career strike rate of 172.44. In his T20 career, Head has scored at a strike rate below 100 four times so far.
The southpaw was seen struggling big time in the middle as he continuously failed to time the ball with MI bowlers coming fully prepared to counter his aggressive strokeplay.
Head was fresh from a quick fire 66 (37) against Punjab Kings in the previous fixture which helped SRH chase down the second-highest score in the tournament’s history of 246. However, he looked like a pale shadow of himself in the middle against MI, as SRH failed to hit a single six in the first 16 overs of the innings.
