Pakistan’s struggles continued in the ODI series against New Zealand as they suffered an 84-run defeat in the second match, conceding the series with an unassailable 2-0 lead.

Despite another batting collapse, Naseem Shah provided a rare highlight by scoring his maiden ODI half-century. Chasing 293, Pakistan was bowled out for just 208.

Naseem Shah’s fighting fifty, world record

Amid the collapse, Faheem Ashraf (73 off 80) and Naseem Shah (51 off 44) offered some resistance. Playing as a concussion substitute for Haris Rauf, Naseem showcased his batting potential, striking four fours and four sixes in his gritty knock.

Batting at number 11, Naseem Shah played a resilient knock of 51 runs, becoming the second-highest scorer from this position in ODI history.

The record for the highest individual score at No. 11 in ODIs belongs to Mohammad Amir, who scored 58 runs against England in 2016. Notably, the top three highest scores by No. 11 batters in ODIs are all held by Pakistani players. Shoaib Akhtar ranks third with his 43-run knock against England in 2003.

New Zealand’s resilient batting display

New Zealand started strong with a 54-run opening stand, but Pakistan’s bowlers fought back, reducing the hosts to 132/5.

However, wicketkeeper-batter Michael Hay played a match-defining knock, forming a 77-run partnership with Muhammad Abbas. While Abbas fell for 41, Hay remained unbeaten on 99 off 78 balls, smashing seven fours and seven sixes. His heroics powered New Zealand to a solid 292/8.

Pakistan’s batting fails again

Pakistan’s chase got off to a disastrous start, with the top five batters failing to reach double digits. By the time the score reached 65, half the side was back in the pavilion. Even captain Babar Azam faltered, managing just a single run before his dismissal.

New Zealand clinch series 2-0

With this dominant win, New Zealand sealed the series 2-0, exposing Pakistan’s persistent batting struggles. If Pakistan hopes to bounce back, a significant turnaround in their batting performances is key.
