Currently, Smith owns 130 pieces of Rick Owens, while Luo counts 80. Though Luo’s style skews sexier, the two sometimes share clothes, including a skirt that Luo bought. They also have the same Bevel Kiss boots with Lucite heels. “There is the same guy who recognizes us on the street wearing them,” says Smith.
While they both have a deep appreciation for construction and design, they also try not to take it too seriously. “I like exaggerated, messed-up silhouettes, but I also need someone who is kind of laughing at themselves,” Smith says. “I think Rick is kind of a goofball.” That levity is what makes Smith so attractive to Luo. “Working in the industry, you meet so many people who take themselves seriously,” says Luo. “At the end of the day, I love clothes so much, but it’s just clothing. There’s more to life.”
Aside from Rick Owens, Luo still likes Ann Demeulemeester and Comme des Garçons, while Smith has been expanding his design palette with Comme des Garçons and Balenciaga. But not everything is a hit. Luo hates one of his Balenciaga tops, a double shirt. “It’s so stupid in a good way,” he says. Despite their differences, the two agree on one thing: “You have to wear Rick with Rick,” says Luo.
