Numerous diets, calorie deficits, and intense gym workouts later, are you still struggling to shed a couple of pounds? If you are on a weight loss journey and want quick results, digital creator Samuel Emmanuel Dickerson Jr. recommends ditching ‘double carbing’.
“Pick one carb source per meal. I wouldn’t do the burger and fries together, because both the burger bun and the fries are loaded with carbs. Instead, do a plate of vegetables or two burger patties without the buns,” Dickerson shared in a video posted on Instagram.
What is double carbing?
Umang Malhotra, clinical dietitian at Fitelo, explained that double carbing refers to the practice of combining two starchy carbohydrate sources in a single meal—like rice with potato curry, chapati with pulao and dal, or pasta with bread.
“While these combinations are common in many cuisines, they significantly increase the meal’s total carbohydrate and calorie content without adding much nutritional balance. This excess carb load often leads to quick spikes in blood sugar and insulin levels, followed by energy crashes, cravings, and fat storage—especially when the body doesn’t use that energy immediately,” he said.
When consumed, carbohydrates are broken down into glucose, which the body uses for energy. Any excess glucose that isn’t used right away is stored as fat. According to Malhotra, frequent insulin spikes from high-carb meals can reduce the body’s ability to burn stored fat efficiently, slowing metabolism and making weight loss more difficult.
“By avoiding double-carbing, you reduce the meal’s overall glycemic load, helping to stabilise blood sugar levels, improve insulin sensitivity, and support a more efficient fat-burning process,” Malhotra told indianexpress.com.
How can you get started?
Malhotra said that cutting out one starchy carb in favour of high-fiber vegetables or protein is a simple but effective strategy for those aiming to lose weight or manage blood sugar.
For example, he suggested trying soya pulao and a mix of sautéed vegetables instead of pairing rice with a potato-based curry. “Replace garlic bread served with pasta with a side of grilled vegetables or a protein like tofu or chicken. These swaps not only reduce the carbohydrate burden but also increase satiety and nutritional quality, helping you stay fuller for longer and avoid energy dips,” he added.

In short, avoiding double carbing can be a practical tool for better digestion, metabolic health, and sustainable weight loss. It encourages more balanced meals that include fiber, protein, and healthy fats—key components for regulating hunger hormones and promoting long-term energy balance.
