  • Dukes ball will always help fast bowlers: Ajit Agarkar

Former India cricketer Ajit Agarkar is “certain” of Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah and Ishant Sharma making into the playing XI of World Test Championship (WTC) final versus New Zealand from June 18 in Southampton.

The Indian team led by Virat Kohli has already landed in Southampton and serving the mandatory quarantine period. Players have been sharing pictures of the Rose bowl which is visible from their hotel rooms attached to the stadium.

Players must surely be itching to get on the lush green field, fans are equally excited and crciket pundits are also busy talking about the inaugural summit clash which will make one between India and New Zealand, the champion of the oldest and classiest format of the game.

The Dukes ball and the English conditions will make the selection of the playing XI tricky for India. Whether to go in the match with 3 pacers or 4, will be a massive call. Agarkar, however, is certain of Shami, Bumrah and Ishant finding a place in the historic encounter and a fourth pacer can also be included according to him.

“The seamers will play a part and India has got as formidable an attack as any in the world. I think that’s been their strength over the last few years. Whether it is a Bumrah, Shami – the No.1 bowler for me for a Test line-up for India and Ishant Sharma, he has gotten better over his career as he has played,” Agarkar told Star Sports.

“So, those three certainly will start and if it is a green seaming wicket, you might see a fourth one for all you know. We still don’t know what the conditions are likely to be but we presume in England, with the Dukes ball in particular, there will always be help for the seam bowlers. You can’t imagine a pitch being very dry in mid-June,” he added.

Shardul Thakur, Mohammed Siraj and Umesh Yadav are the other three pacers in Team India’s main squad for the tour which also includes 5 Test matches vs England.

New Zealand are currently facing England in a Test match at Lord’s.
