Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Sunrisers Hyderabad started IPL 2026 with different pressures hanging over them, but both now find themselves exactly where they hoped to be before a ball was bowled. In the playoffs, carrying momentum, belief and the feeling that this could still become their season.
When RCB walked into the tournament as defending champions, scrutiny was inevitable. Winning a title changes everything around a franchise. Every performance is judged differently, every flaw dissected more closely. The challenge was no longer about becoming champions. It was about proving last season was not a fleeting high.
For SRH, the pressure came from another direction. Over the last few years, Hyderabad had built one of the most explosive squads in the league, yet they often struggled to sustain rhythm when it mattered most. There were flashes of dominance mixed with stretches of frustration. This season carried the sense that the team finally needed to turn promise into authority.
On Friday at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, the two sides meet in their final league-stage fixture. What once promised to be a thrilling finish in the race for the top two has now become largely a formality, because SRH are highly unlikely to break into those spots due to the massive net run rate gap.
The situation changed after Gujarat Titans obliterated Chennai Super Kings by 89 runs a day earlier at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. So, what is left to play for?
RCB HAVE FIRM GRIP ON TOP 2
RCB currently sit at the top of the table with 18 points and the best net run rate in the competition. Another victory would secure a first-place finish and hand them two chances to reach the final, an advantage every team desperately wants at this stage of the tournament.
The strongest feature of Bengaluru’s campaign has been the composure with which they have handled pressure. There have been very few off days, no extended slump and hardly any visible panic during difficult moments. Rajat Patidar has captained with calm assurance, creating an environment where experienced names and younger players have thrived together.
At the centre of it all has been Virat Kohli. There is something almost expected now about Kohli producing another big IPL season, but familiarity should not take away from the level he continues to maintain. His 542 runs have once again given RCB strong foundations, whether in steep run chases or on slower surfaces where patience mattered as much as aggression.
Devdutt Padikkal has looked far more settled this season and has complemented Kohli beautifully at the top. Patidar has brought stability through the middle overs, while Tim David and Romario Shepherd have supplied the late acceleration that makes RCB dangerous right till the final ball.
Their bowling attack, though, has arguably shaped their season even more.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar has rolled back the years with one of his finest IPL campaigns. The movement with the new ball remains dangerous, but it is his control and understanding of situations that have stood out most. His 24 wickets in 13 matches have regularly handed RCB early momentum. Josh Hazlewood’s presence has added discipline and experience, Krunal Pandya has quietly delivered an excellent all-round season, while Suyash Sharma and Rasikh Salam have stepped up whenever needed.
SRH TOP-2 QUALIFICATION SCENARIO
While a top-two finish might be nearly impossible, SRH still remain mathematically alive. In the highly improbable scenario that they beat RCB by more than 87 runs, or chase down a 180-run target within 11 overs, SRH could overturn RCB’s net run rate and finish second behind Gujarat Titans.
Hyderabad remain one of the few teams capable of unsettling even the most balanced bowling attacks once their batting finds rhythm, and that should still give SRH fans some hope.
There is a fearlessness to SRH’s approach that can completely alter the direction of a match within a few overs. Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan have repeatedly attacked from the outset, refusing to allow bowlers any breathing space during the powerplay. Travis Head has not produced the same consistency as last season, but every opposition knows how quickly he can take a game away once he gets going.
Then there is Heinrich Klaasen, who has once again become the backbone of Hyderabad’s batting. His 555 runs have often arrived in situations where SRH needed somebody to absorb pressure before counterattacking. Few batters in world cricket are as destructive against both spin and pace once Klaasen settles at the crease.
What has hurt SRH at times is their inability to sustain that intensity consistently. During their five-match winning streak, they looked unstoppable. But there have also been games where the batting lost direction under pressure and left the side chasing the contest. Those inconsistencies are the biggest concern heading into the knockouts.
Even so, there is plenty within this squad to inspire confidence.
Pat Cummins’ return midway through the season brought renewed clarity to the side. Beyond his wickets or tactical decisions, Cummins carries a calm presence that naturally steadies the dressing room during tense moments. Around him, SRH’s bowling unit has steadily grown stronger.
Young Sri Lankan pacer Eshan Malinga has emerged as one of the finds of IPL 2026. His 17 wickets have come through a mix of pace, control and an impressive understanding of match situations. Sakib Hussain and Praful Hinge have provided valuable support, giving Hyderabad a much sharper bowling unit than the one they fielded earlier in the season.
SRH vs RCB: BATTLE OF POWERPLAY
Few contests could shape this game more than the battle between Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Abhishek Sharma with the new ball. For over a decade, Bhuvneshwar was one of SRH’s most trusted match-winners, and now he returns to Hyderabad wearing RCB colours while leading the Purple Cap race with 24 wickets.
Waiting for him will be Abhishek Sharma, whose fearless hitting has powered SRH throughout the season. The opener has crossed 500 runs at a strike rate touching 200 and has often taken games away inside the powerplay itself. If Bhuvneshwar can strike early, RCB gain control. If Abhishek survives, Hyderabad could once again explode out of the blocks.
SRH vs RCB: HEAD-TO-HEAD
RCB and SRH began IPL 2026 against each other in Bengaluru, where Hyderabad chased down 202 to make an early statement. Their rivalry has often produced close, high-scoring contests, with SRH holding a slight edge overall.
Hyderabad lead the head-to-head battle 14-12 across 26 matches and have been particularly strong at home, winning six of the nine games against RCB in Hyderabad.
HYDERABAD WEATHER AND PITCH CONDITIONS
Pitch No. 2 will be used for Friday’s clash in Hyderabad, and history suggests another run-fest could be on the cards. Traditionally one of the best batting surfaces at the venue, this pitch has already produced massive totals in IPL 2026. SRH piled up 242 for 2 against Delhi Capitals and followed it up with 234 for 4 against Punjab Kings on the same strip, winning both matches comfortably after batting first.
With power-hitters stacked in both line-ups, another high-scoring contest looks likely. The weather is also expected to stay clear, with temperatures hovering in the late 30s Celsius and no rain forecast.
SRH vs RCB: TEAM NEWS
RCB have received a timely boost ahead of the clash, with captain Rajat Patidar set to return after missing the previous game against Punjab Kings because of injury. Director of cricket Mo Bobat confirmed that the skipper is fully fit again.
“Rajat’s good to go. We were cautious and didn’t take any risks with him. We thought we’d give him a little bit longer to recover and rest, but he’s here, he’s practicing and he’s good to go,” Bobat said.
