Kylian Mbappe has long made the World Cup his stage. On Tuesday night in New York New Jersey, he added another chapter to an already remarkable legacy.
The France captain struck twice in a commanding 3-0 victory over Sweden to send Les Bleus into the Round of 16, extending his record for the most goals scored in World Cup knockout matches. His brace also took him to 18 goals in World Cup history, one shy of Lionel Messi’s tally, while drawing level with the Argentine on six goals in the race for this edition’s Golden Boot. Mbappe currently leads the standings by virtue of two assists.
Bradley Barcola added France’s second goal as Didier Deschamps’ men underlined their status as one of the tournament favourites and booked a meeting with Paraguay in Philadelphia on July 4.
France vs Sweden, FIFA World Cup 2026: Highlights
KNOCKOUT KING
The World Cup has consistently brought the best out of Mbappe, but the knockout rounds have become his true domain.
With Sweden determined to frustrate France, the 27-year-old once again found the breakthrough when it mattered most. After a patient first-half display in which Les Bleus repeatedly threatened without reward, Mbappe finally unlocked the contest moments before halftime.
Receiving the ball inside the penalty area after neat work between Michael Olise and Ousmane Dembele from a short corner, Mbappe shifted the ball onto his right foot with trademark quickness before drilling an unstoppable effort beyond Jacob Widell Zetterstrom.
His celebration said just as much as the finish.
Rather than soak in the applause, Mbappe sprinted straight towards Didier Deschamps, embracing his manager, who had only recently returned to the France camp after attending his mother’s funeral. Soon the entire French squad surrounded their coach, offering a touching reminder of the togetherness that has become one of the team’s defining qualities.
FRANCE FIND ANOTHER GEAR
Sweden had survived long enough to remain in the contest before halftime, but any hopes of mounting a comeback disappeared almost immediately after the restart.
Michael Olise, who quietly orchestrated much of France’s attacking play, split Sweden’s defence with a perfectly weighted through ball that released Bradley Barcola. The Paris Saint-Germain winger made no mistake, confidently finishing to double France’s advantage and score his second goal of the tournament.
Olise continued to torment Sweden’s backline and was rewarded with another assist midway through the second half.
This time it was Mbappe who raced onto the midfielder’s incisive pass before producing another composed finish beyond the advancing goalkeeper. It was a familiar sight. The captain calmly wheeled away in celebration after registering his ninth World Cup knockout goal, a record that continues to underline his extraordinary influence whenever football’s biggest tournament reaches its defining stages.
With the result secured, Deschamps withdrew his captain to a standing ovation as France comfortably closed out another convincing victory.
A LEADER ON A MISSION
Mbappe’s numbers continue to dominate headlines, but his influence on this France side stretches well beyond goals.
Still carrying the scars of the dramatic 2022 World Cup final defeat to Argentina, the captain has repeatedly insisted that individual accolades mean little without another winners’ medal. Throughout the tournament he has spoken about unity, publicly backed teammates during difficult moments and embraced his role as the leader of a squad chasing a third successive World Cup final.
Deschamps believes his captain has evolved into far more than just France’s chief goalscorer.
“Kylian knows how to defend. He scores goals too, more than anyone else,” the France coach said after the match.
“I told you from day one that he’s on a mission. He has embraced his role as captain. The image people may have of him from the outside only rarely reflects who he really is.”
Mbappe echoed that sentiment while explaining the emotional celebration with his coach.
“That’s the DNA of this group,” he said.
“We’re all in this together. The coach has gone through something that, unfortunately, everyone experiences at some point in life. It’s incredibly difficult. He’ll never be alone with us. We’ll support him.”
Asked if his focus had already shifted to Paraguay, Mbappe offered a smile.
“Right now my focus is on the air conditioning and the dressing room.”
PARAGUAY NEXT
France have now won all four of their matches at the tournament, scoring 13 goals while conceding only twice, and appear to be gathering momentum at exactly the right time.
Their next challenge comes against Paraguay, who stunned four-time champions Germany on penalties to book their place in the Round of 16.
For Mbappe, meanwhile, another knockout tie means another opportunity to add to a record that already stands alone. One goal now separates him from Messi’s overall World Cup tally, while the Golden Boot race remains finely poised.
If France are to reach a third consecutive World Cup final, history suggests there is no player they would rather have leading the line when the knockout rounds begin.
