What Is The Story About?
The story follows 95-year-old Ishar Singh, who is living with dementia and recovering from a stroke. As his health declines, he repeatedly speaks about returning to his ancestral home in Sargodha, now in Pakistan.
His grandson Nirvair Singh sets out to understand the reason behind this final wish. As he pieces together his grandfather’s fading memories, he uncovers a heartbreaking love story from before the Partition.
The narrative moves between the present and the past, where Vedang Raina plays the younger Ishar, also known as Keenu, while Sharvari stars as Jiya (Afsana), the woman he loved before violence and migration tore them apart. Through their journey, the film explores love, loss, identity, displacement and the true meaning of home.
Cast And Characters
The film stars Diljit Dosanjh as Nirvair Singh, Naseeruddin Shah as Ishar Singh, Vedang Raina as young Ishar (Keenu), Sharvari as Jiya/Afsana, and Banita Sandhu as Kaveri. The supporting cast includes Rajat Kapoor, Sanjay Suri, Kumud Mishra, Danish Pandor, Dolly Ahluwalia and Anjana Sukhani.

Crew And Box Office
Main Vaapas Aaunga is directed and co-written by Imtiaz Ali along with Nayanika Mahtani. It is produced by Applause Entertainment, Birla Studios and Window Seat Films, while AR Rahman has composed the music, with lyrics by Irshad Kamil.
Released in theatres on June 12, 2026, the film emerged as a sleeper hit, collecting Rs 98.11 crore worldwide.
Imtiaz Ali’s Gratitude Post
The film recently completed 50 days in theatres, a milestone that director Imtiaz Ali celebrated in an Instagram post. Thanking audiences for turning the film into a word-of-mouth success despite its slow start, he said their love had given hope to filmmakers. Ali also expressed gratitude to the cast, crew, exhibitors, distributors and production partners for supporting the film throughout its theatrical run.

Main Vaapas Aaunga can be streamed on Netflix from August 7, 2026. The Hindi-language drama marks Imtiaz Ali’s second collaboration with Diljit Dosanjh after Amar Singh Chamkila.
