Former India captain Sourav Ganguly and star all-rounder Yuvraj Singh’s active presence at the Delhi Capitals trials in Bengaluru has added fresh fuel to reports of a major coaching overhaul at the franchise ahead of IPL 2027. Neither the franchise nor the two former India stars have formally announced new roles, but their involvement at the Just Cricket Academy has only intensified the speculation.
Yuvraj, who has recently been linked with a move into the Delhi Capitals backroom setup, was stationed behind the umpire during the trials, closely observing and guiding the batters. Ganguly was also involved in the proceedings, alongside new coaching staff member Amit Mishra.
The timing of their involvement is significant, with reports suggesting that the JSW-led phase of the franchise’s management is set to bring substantial changes to the coaching setup. Under the arrangement between DC’s co-owners, GMR Sports and JSW Sports, control of franchise operations alternates between the two groups in two-year cycles.
The franchise has not yet made an official announcement about its coaching structure for the 2027 season. However, the presence of Ganguly and Yuvraj together at the trials has only added to the expectation that they could take up key roles in the revamped setup.
GANGULY-YUVI REUNION TAKING SHAPE?
According to reports, Ganguly is set to take on a major role as head coach or director of cricket, while Yuvraj could come in as the batting coach. Such an arrangement would reunite two of India’s most influential white-ball figures in a new capacity.
Ganguly, who became JSW’s director of cricket in 2024, has already been closely involved with the Capitals ecosystem. He has worked with the Pretoria Capitals in the SA20 and has also played an active role with DC’s women’s team. He previously served as DC’s mentor in IPL 2019 before becoming BCCI president.
Yuvraj, meanwhile, would be taking his first formal coaching role in the IPL. The 2007 T20 World Cup and 2011 ODI World Cup Player of the Tournament has increasingly been involved in mentoring India’s next generation of batters, with Shubman Gill and Abhishek Sharma among those to have credited him for his guidance.
That relationship with current DC captain Rishabh Pant adds another interesting layer to the potential appointment. Pant has previously turned to Yuvraj for advice during difficult phases of his career, including before IPL 2026, when the wicketkeeper-batter worked with him during sessions in Mumbai.
In fact, Yuvraj’s name had already featured in Pant’s thinking around the franchise. Before IPL 2025, when Pant eventually left DC for Lucknow Super Giants, it was understood that he had suggested several names for additions to the coaching staff, with Yuvraj among them. Ganguly and Yuvraj were also understood to have been involved in discussions around Pant’s eventual return to DC.
Now, with Pant back in the Capitals setup and Yuvraj increasingly involved around the franchise, the possibility of that relationship taking on a formal coaching dimension is particularly intriguing.
WHY IS DC HEADING FOR A RESET?
The reported overhaul comes after DC missed the playoffs in each of the last two seasons, finishing sixth in IPL 2026. The existing setup of Venugopal Rao, Hemang Badani, Munaf Patel and Ian Bell is reportedly unlikely to continue into the next cycle.
Ganguly’s relationship with Yuvraj also adds another layer to the reports. Ganguly was Yuvraj’s first international captain and has reportedly been keen on bringing the former India all-rounder into the Capitals setup.
The franchise has never won the IPL in 19 seasons, with their run to the 2020 final remaining their best result.
