With the 2027 ODI World Cup less than a year away, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli‘s recent form has strengthened their prospects of featuring in the marquee tournament. Former India all-rounder Robin Singh believes the two experienced batters will be valuable assets for the Men in Blue as they prepare for the global showpiece in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.Rohit has scored two centuries and a 92 in his last five ODI innings, while Kohli has registered a hundred and two half-centuries during the same period. Their consistency has made them strong contenders as India work towards finalising their World Cup combination.Speaking exclusively to IANS, Robin emphasised that their current form, fitness and experience would be crucial to India’s campaign.

‘They definitely will be a big asset’: Robin Singh on Rohit, Kohli

Robin believes that age should not be a concern for the two former India captains, given their recent performances and commitment to fitness.“I think experience is one thing. But more importantly, I think it’s their form that is important. And of course, you know, with age you have enough and more experience. So that’s really not a problem. They know what to do,” Robin told IANS.“It’s more about staying in the moment, staying fit and keeping playing well. I think they are doing that exceptionally well. So there are no complaints. They definitely will be a big asset to the Indian team,” he added.

Robin Singh backs Gambhir’s World Cup planning

India have been experimenting with different combinations in recent ODI series as head coach Gautam Gambhir and his support staff assess their options ahead of the 2027 World Cup. Robin said the team management would look to provide opportunities to players who fit its long-term strategy before finalising the squad.“I’m pretty sure Gautam and his team members will have their formula. I am sure he has a way of what he would like to do in the World Cup. What type of players he wants for the World Cup,” he said.He added that the upcoming assignments would be important for identifying the best combination for the tournament.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammed Shami‘s World Cup chances

Robin also weighed in on the prospects of experienced pacers Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mohammed Shami returning to India’s plans, particularly with the 2027 World Cup set to be held in seam-friendly conditions. He said both bowlers have done enough to earn consideration, although their selection would depend on the team’s requirements.“I think these two are excellent bowlers irrespective of their age. They have actually done enough to give themselves a chance to get back into the side. Both are really good bowlers, excellent bowlers,” Robin said.
