Former India batter S. Badrinath has found himself at the centre of a social media storm following a controversial remark made during the Tamil commentary of Sunday’s IPL thriller between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Mumbai Indians (MI).
The incident occurred as RCB’s Krunal Pandya collapsed in agony with severe cramping during a high-stakes run-chase in Raipur. As MI wicketkeeper Ryan Rickelton stepped in to help the batter stretch, Badrinath, commentating for the regional feed, remarked: “Opposition ‘Cramp ku nee saavu’ nu sollama vandhu stretch panirkanga parava ille.” RCB vs MI: HIGHLIGHTS | SCORECARD
When translated literally, the phrase – specifically the word “saavu” (die) – appeared to suggest a callousness toward the player’s distress. The clip went viral on Monday, May 11, with fans accusing the commentator of being insensitive. However, Badrinath was quick to clarify that his intent was the exact opposite.
THE SLAG REFERENCE
Taking to social media to clear the air, Badrinath explained that his words were a tribute to sportsmanship, delivered in colloquial Tamil.
“Let him die there” that’s not going to be my attitude. I will go and stretch him. Great gesture from Ryan Rickelton.. Fair Play points should be given to him and MI for that,” he said.
“This is what I said on air, for people who don’t understand colloquial Tamil,” he added.
THE KNOCK OF THE SEASON?
The controversy served as a dramatic backdrop to what was arguably Krunal Pandya’s finest hour in an RCB shirt. Chasing a formidable target to keep their playoff hopes alive, Krunal defied his own body in a display of pure grit.
Despite the debilitating cramps that left him grounded multiple times, Krunal hammered a masterful 73 off 46 balls. His innings was a masterclass in calculated aggression, picking the gaps with surgical precision and clearing the ropes when the required rate climbed.
Pandya’s assault on Allah Ghazanfar in the 18th over became the defining image of RCB’s victory. Despite collapsing onto the pitch with severe cramps and refusing singles, Krunal hammered two towering sixes off the young spinner to bring the equation down, before eventually falling on the final ball of the over for a heroic 73.
Every time it appeared Krunal might retire hurt, he hauled himself back up, eventually guiding RCB to a famous victory that officially knocked the five-time champions, Mumbai Indians, out of the 2026 title race.
The win has catapulted RCB back into the conversation for the top four, while MI is left to reflect on a season of narrow misses.
Following the match, Krunal took to Instagram to share a photo of a scar, captioned: “Some scars are proof that it was worth fighting for.”
While the commentary box debate may linger, the evening in Raipur will be remembered for two things: a display of supreme sportsmanship from Ryan Rickelton and a legendary act of defiance from Krunal Pandya that silenced the stadium and, eventually, the critics.
