Barcelona manager Hansi Flick confirmed on Tuesday that he will extend his contract with FC Barcelona until 2028 after guiding the Catalan giants to another La Liga title-winning campaign.

Flick, whose previous deal was set to expire in June 2027, revealed that the new agreement will keep him at Barcelona until June 2028, with an optional additional year linked to performance-based objectives.

The extension comes after Barcelona sealed the league title with three matches to spare following their victory over arch-rivals Real Madrid on Sunday, moving to an unassailable 91 points.

“I’ll let you know, sorry, the last few days I’ve had different things to do,” Flick told reporters, referring to the death of his father on Sunday.

“Of course, I’m really happy about this (contract extension). They have given me and my team the confidence to work one or two years more, so for me it’s like that.

“I think a lot of coaches would be happy if they get a contract of three, four or five years, but in Barca’s case it’s good to limit it. I really appreciate it a lot.

“We go to 2028 and then we’ll see if everything is right, and if so, we can decide on one more year. The club has the right, and I have the right. I think it’s a good deal.”

The 61-year-old German arrived at Barcelona in 2024 on a two-year contract after a difficult spell with the Germany national football team, where he was dismissed in September 2023. Before that, Flick had established himself as one of Europe’s elite managers after leading Bayern Munich to a historic treble-winning season.

Under Flick, Barcelona quickly re-established themselves as Spain’s dominant force, winning successive La Liga titles alongside the 2024-25 Copa del Rey and back-to-back Spanish Super Cup crowns. His attacking style and ability to revive several young players have earned widespread praise from supporters and club officials alike.

However, Barcelona’s European ambitions fell short this season after they were knocked out of the Champions League at the quarter-final stage by Atletico Madrid.

“In the last few days they showed me that I am here in the right place, and I really appreciate what they give me, all the people, to me and my team, and my family,” Flick said.

“For next season, it is also a big commitment for us to work harder, even harder than this season, to reach the best level with the team and to win titles.

“This is normal for Barca. I know everyone has this dream to win the Champions League. We will try again. That’s what I can say. I am grateful for the confidence they have given me to work here for more years.”

Barcelona will next face Deportivo Alaves on Wednesday as preparations begin for another title defence under Flick.
