Varun Chakravarthy’s injury concern appears to be far more serious than initially expected after the mystery spinner missed Kolkata Knight Riders’s crucial IPL 2026 clash against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Raipur on Wednesday. With KKR fighting to keep their playoff hopes alive, Chakravarthy’s absence immediately became one of the biggest talking points before toss alongside RCB’s surprise decision to drop Romario Shepherd from the playing XI.
Varun had already raised concern around the KKR camp after he was spotted wearing knee braces and using crutches following the side’s previous match against Delhi Capitals. While assistant coach Shane Watson had said a day earlier that the franchise remained hopeful about the spinner’s availability, Wednesday’s omission now suggests the issue may be more than just precautionary management.
IPL, RCB vs KKR: UPDATES | SCORECARD
And honestly, given KKR’s current position in the tournament, it would have taken something significant for them to leave Varun out.
Every remaining game for Kolkata has effectively become a knockout fixture after their poor start to the season, which makes the absence of arguably their most important middle-overs bowler even more damaging.
Captain Ajinkya Rahane, however, did not provide further details about the extent of Varun’s injury at the toss and only confirmed that Saurabh Dubey had come into the side in his place.
The timing of the setback could not have been worse for KKR either because Varun had only recently rediscovered his rhythm after a difficult beginning to IPL 2026.
After going wicketless in his first three matches of the season, the spinner bounced back strongly with 10 wickets in the following four games, including a match-winning spell against Sunrisers Hyderabad that played a major role in reviving Kolkata’s playoff hopes.
KKR have managed to pull themselves back into contention with four consecutive wins after losing six matches earlier in the campaign. But without Varun, their bowling attack suddenly looks a lot less threatening on a Raipur pitch expected to assist slower bowlers and cutters.
RCB LOSING TRUST ON ROMARIO SHEPHERD?
While KKR dealt with the Varun concern, RCB also made one of their biggest selection calls of the season by dropping Romario Shepherd for the high-pressure encounter.
New Zealand pacer Jacob Duffy came into the XI alongside Venkatesh Iyer as Bengaluru reshuffled their combination for a game carrying major playoff implications.
The move perhaps reflects growing concerns inside the RCB camp regarding Shepherd’s overall impact this season.
Acting as one of Bengaluru’s designated finishers, the West Indies all-rounder has struggled to consistently provide explosive finishing in pressure situations. In the dramatic win over Mumbai Indians recently, Shepherd consumed 15 deliveries for just 23 runs during the chase, which almost dragged RCB out of the game before Krunal Pandya and Bhuvneshwar Kumar rescued them late.
Overall, Shepherd has scored only 83 runs across seven innings this season at a strike rate of around 125.75, numbers that feel underwhelming for someone primarily picked to dominate death overs.
The bowling returns have not helped much either.
Despite picking up wickets occasionally, Shepherd has leaked runs regularly at the back end of innings and currently holds a bowling average close to 40 while often struggling with execution under pressure.
That perhaps explains why RCB finally decided to make a change with the playoffs approaching and squad combinations becoming increasingly important.
For Bengaluru though, the bigger challenge remains finding the perfect balance between batting depth and bowling reliability heading into the business end of IPL 2026.
