In the maddening race to the IPL playoffs, where a solitary defeat can trigger existential dread, Chennai Super Kings captain Ruturaj Gaikwad chose an unexpected virtue after his side’s heavy defeat to Lucknow Super Giants on Friday: nonchalance.
For a fan base accustomed to Dhoni-era calculated pragmatism, Gaikwad’s post-match assessment of Chennai’s precarious playoff road was met with distinct bewilderment. “It is a simple calculation for us,” Gaikwad said, dismissing the mathematical anxieties swirling around the franchise. “Win each and every game for how much ever games we play. So I think nothing is simple. I mean, it is simple, nothing complicated. So quite easy here on for us. Nothing to worry about.”
While the captain sought to project a relaxed demeanour, the cold reality of the points table suggests anything but simplicity. The comprehensive seven-wicket bruising at the Ekana Stadium has left Chennai’s campaign on a knife-edge. Dropping to sixth place with 12 points from 12 matches, the five-time champions have surrendered control of their own destiny.
Can CSK qualify for the play-offs?
With Nicholas Pooran and Mitchell Marsh making a mockery of Chennai’s 187-run total, the manner of the defeat has severely dented CSK’s Net Run Rate, which now languishes at a fragile +0.027. To even reach the traditional safety ceiling of 16 points, Chennai must win both of their remaining league fixtures—a home game against Sunrisers Hyderabad on May 18, followed by an away fixture against Gujarat Titans on May 21. Even then, they remain at the mercy of other results and a congested mid-table traffic jam.
Gaikwad, however, chose to focus on the immediate logistics over the looming mathematical permutations. “Well, the first challenge is getting to Chennai. It’s a long flight,” he said.
“After that, just make sure we come back and improve what are the areas we need to improve and yes, try and adapt and assess the conditions as quickly as possible. Just make sure we have a good day. Make it count whoever has a good day and hope that we turn things around.”
LOVE THE PRESSURE: HUSSEY
If the captain’s breezy optimism stunned the faithful, assistant coach Michael Hussey provided a more seasoned, albeit equally defiant, perspective. Embracing the squeeze of the final week of the league phase, the Australian veteran suggested that the pressure could act as a catalyst for a side that historically thrives in the crucible of knockouts.
“There is a lot of teams fighting for the last couple of spots. I love this,” Hussey said. “This is where the pressure starts building, not just on us, but on every other team. This is where some crazy things happen. While we have a chance, we still have belief that we can make it through.”
Acknowledging that Chennai now require outside assistance to bridge the gap, Hussey remained upbeat about the tournament’s frantic finish. “We have to take care of our business. Probably need a couple of results to go our way as well. But that’s the nature of the tournament. I think we are building towards a really nice climax,” he added. “It’s a great opportunity to play well in the next match, giving ourselves a chance by winning the next two games. That is how we will be looking at it.”
CSK will take on SunRisers Hyderabad in their next game on Monday at Chepauk while they will be hoping the likes of Punjab Kings and Rajasthan Royals don’t push along with wins under their belts.
