Elina Svitolina scripted one of the most emotional triumphs of her career after winning the 2026 Italian Open title in Rome, and no one appeared prouder than her husband, Gael Monfils. On Saturday, Svitolina defeated Coco Gauff in a gripping three-set final, winning 6-4, 6-7(3), 6-2 to reclaim the clay-court title after an eight-year wait. HOW SVITOLINA DEFEATED GAUFF
Against Gauff, Svitolina began aggressively, using her movement and defensive skills to frustrate Gauff in long rallies before taking the opening set 6-4.
Gauff fought back strongly in the second set and forced a tiebreak, where the American raised her level to push the contest into a decider. However, Svitolina completely dominated the third set with her consistency from the baseline and ability to absorb pressure before counterattacking at the right moments.
The title was historically significant for Svitolina. She became a three-time Italian Open champion, having previously won the tournament in 2017 and 2018.
