After 11 days of competition in Glasgow, the curtain will come down on the 2026 Commonwealth Games on Sunday night. For India, however, the closing ceremony will be less about saying goodbye and more about looking ahead.
Ahmedabad will officially be welcomed as the host city for the 2030 Commonwealth Games during the traditional handover ceremony, receiving the Commonwealth Games flag and the King’s Baton in front of a global audience. The moment will formally launch India’s preparations for hosting the Games for only the second time, with the 2030 edition carrying added significance as the centenary Commonwealth Games.
The ceremony is expected to offer the first glimpse of Ahmedabad 2030, with India using the cultural handover segment to showcase its heritage while signalling its ambitions of staging one of the biggest sporting events in the country’s history. Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi will represent India during the formal handover in Glasgow.
The Indian segment will celebrate the country’s cultural diversity with a special focus on Gujarat, while organisers have promised performances that symbolise the friendship between Scotland and India ahead of the official transfer of hosting responsibilities.
AHMEDABAD GEARS UP FOR CWG 2030
The handover ceremony will feature three acts showcasing India’s cultural identity.
It will begin with a tribute to the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram, followed by a unique jugalbandi between acclaimed sitar exponent Rishabh Rikhiram Sharma and Scottish piper Ross Ainsley. The final act will take viewers on a cultural journey across India with Gujarat at its heart.
Glasgow 2026 Chief Marketing and Ceremonies Officer Louisa Mahon said the event would be “not a formality” but a celebration of two cultures sharing the same stage.
“This handover is not a formality. This event will express the spirit of two nations on the same stage,” Mahon said, adding that Glasgow audiences would get their first glimpse of what Ahmedabad 2030 has in store.
Ceremony Director Chanda Singh said the programme has been designed to present “an India that is confident while remaining rooted in its traditions.”
