The legal dispute between Ethan Klein and Ian “iDubbbz” Washburn is reportedly about more than the original defamation case. According to internet culture reporter Steven Asarch, documents connected to the lawsuit show that Klein was seeking $1 million in damages from iDubbbz. But the bigger sticking point appears to have been what iDubbbz would say about the H3 snark community as part of a possible settlement. Asarch discussed the documents in a YouTube video titled “H3 and iDubbbz Settlement Revealed (With Court Documents)” on August 6, 2026. His breakdown suggested that Klein did not simply want the lawsuit dropped. Instead, he reportedly wanted a settlement with specific conditions. One of those conditions became a major problem: iDubbbz was allegedly unwilling to condemn snark and the Reddit communities connected to it.

Why Ethan Klein was reportedly seeking $1 million from iDubbbz

Asarch said the lawsuit sought $1 million in damages. He also pointed out that Klein repeatedly mentioned Reddit and snark in the defamation case. The amount became part of Asarch’s criticism of the lawsuit. He questioned why iDubbbz would be held responsible for the situation when, according to his description, the livestream involved had only been viewed by “a couple of hundred people.” Asarch also described iDubbbz as not being a successful or popular livestreamer at the moment. That context matters because the reported settlement was not simply about money. Asarch said the court documents showed Klein wanted iDubbbz to follow several conditions rather than just walk away from the case.

The snark subreddit became the reported sticking point

According to Asarch, Klein wanted iDubbbz to publicly condemn the snark subreddit and broader snark communities. He said the statement iDubbbz provided was “not good enough for Ethan Klein.” In Asarch’s reading of the documents, Klein wanted a stronger condemnation of snark and the Reddit communities associated with it.Asarch also gave his own opinion on the issue, saying he believes Ethan and his community sometimes use snark as an excuse to move away from criticism. He described the criticism surrounding snark as something that can be blamed for problems involving the H3 community. The disagreement over that statement is reportedly why the settlement has stalled. Asarch put it simply: “Ian is refusing to condemn snark.”For now, that leaves the reported settlement unresolved. Ethan Klein has not commented on Asarch’s report as of this writing, so the details remain based on the documents and Asarch’s interpretation of them.
