Group D may not contain a traditional heavyweight, but it could end up being one of the most unpredictable groups at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The United States arrive as co-hosts and top seeds, buoyed by home support and the optimism that usually follows a Mauricio Pochettino team. Yet their path to the knockout rounds is far from straightforward. Turkiye bring one of the most exciting young squads in the tournament, Paraguay return to the World Cup after a 16-year absence armed with their trademark defensive resilience, while Australia arrive with the belief that they can once again punch above their weight on football’s biggest stage.
That is what makes Group D so intriguing. Every team can make a realistic argument for reaching the knockouts and none would be particularly shocked to find themselves in the Round of 32.
The action begins on June 12 when the USA face Paraguay at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, a fixture that could immediately shape the complexion of the entire group. By the time the final round arrives, the battle for qualification could still involve all four nations.
GROUP D: MEET THE TEAMS
UNITED STATES
The expectations surrounding the United States feel different this time.
Home World Cups always bring pressure, but Mauricio Pochettino has inherited arguably the deepest and most talented American squad in recent memory. Christian Pulisic remains the face of the project, Folarin Balogun has given the Americans a genuine goalscorer up front, while players such as Weston McKennie, Tyler Adams, Antonee Robinson and Chris Richards bring experience from Europe’s top leagues.
Yet questions remain.
Pulisic enters the tournament after an underwhelming second half of the season with AC Milan, while defensive vulnerabilities have forced Pochettino to experiment with a back three. The midfield, beyond Tyler Adams, lacks proven depth, meaning much of the creative burden will fall on Pulisic, Balogun and Timothy Weah.
The encouraging sign is that the Americans seem to be improving at the right time. A recent friendly victory over Senegal offered a glimpse of their attacking potential and reminded supporters why optimism still surrounds this team.
The USA have not reached a World Cup quarter-final since 2002. Doing so again may be ambitious, but reaching the knockout stages should be the minimum expectation.
TURKIYE
Few teams arrive at the World Cup carrying as much excitement as Turkiye.
This will be only their third World Cup appearance and their first since that remarkable run to third place in 2002. However, there is a growing belief that this generation has the talent to create its own memories.
At the centre of everything stands Arda Guler. The Real Madrid playmaker has developed into one of Europe’s most gifted young creators and heads into the tournament after producing six goals and 14 assists across all competitions. Around him is a supporting cast filled with attacking quality, including Kenan Yildiz, Hakan Calhanoglu, Can Uzun and Baris Alper Yilmaz.
Turkiye’s route to the World Cup was not straightforward. They required the European play-offs after finishing behind Spain in qualifying, but Vincenzo Montella has built a side that plays with confidence and freedom.
The concerns lie elsewhere. Turkiye still lack a natural elite striker and remain vulnerable defensively against top opposition. Yet on paper, they might possess the strongest squad in Group D.
If they click, they could be one of the tournament’s surprise packages.
PARAGUAY
Paraguay are back at the World Cup for the first time since 2010 and they arrive with a familiar identity.
Hard to beat.
Harder to break down.
The South Americans conceded just 10 goals throughout qualifying, a record bettered only by Ecuador. Their compact defensive structure remains the foundation of everything they do, with veterans Gustavo Gomez and Junior Alonso providing leadership at the back.
Going forward, much of the responsibility falls on Julio Enciso. The Strasbourg star enjoyed a breakout campaign in France, contributing 12 goals and 10 assists, and remains Paraguay’s most unpredictable attacking weapon.
The challenge for Paraguay is obvious. Goals do not come easily. Only two South American nations scored fewer during qualifying and that lack of firepower could become costly in a tight group.
Still, World Cups often reward organised teams and Paraguay may be better suited to tournament football than many realise.
AUSTRALIA
Australia enter the tournament as the outsiders, but that has never really bothered the Socceroos.
Few expected them to reach the Round of 16 in Qatar four years ago. Fewer still expected them to qualify comfortably after a difficult start to the current cycle. Yet Tony Popovic’s side recovered from taking just one point from their opening two qualifiers to book another World Cup berth.
Veteran goalkeeper Mathew Ryan remains the leader of the squad and will be appearing at his fourth consecutive World Cup. Around him is a new generation featuring exciting talents such as Nestory Irankunda, Mohamed Toure and Jordan Bos.
Australia may lack the star power of their group rivals, but they compensate through organisation, physicality and discipline. Popovic has built his reputation on defensive solidity and that could prove crucial in a group where margins are expected to be small.
Progression will not be easy, but writing off Australia at a World Cup has rarely been a wise idea.
GROUP D: GAME OF THE GROUP
USA vs Turkiye (June 26, SoFi Stadium)
The final matchday could produce the game that decides Group D.
The USA and Turkiye appear to be the strongest sides on paper and there is every chance both arrive in Los Angeles knowing that top spot is on the line.
The matchup itself is fascinating. Pochettino’s Americans thrive when Pulisic, Balogun and Weah can attack space in transition, while Turkiye possess perhaps the most technically gifted midfield and attacking unit in the group.
The battle between Arda Guler and Tyler Adams could be particularly decisive. If Adams can limit the influence of Turkiye’s chief creator, the hosts will fancy their chances. If not, Guler has the quality to decide games on his own.
With qualification potentially at stake and a packed SoFi Stadium behind the hosts, this feels like the fixture most likely to shape the destiny of Group D.
GROUP D: PLAYERS TO WATCH OUT FOR
Christian Pulisic (USA)
The pressure is unavoidable.
Pulisic has been the face of American football for years and now carries the hopes of a host nation. His recent club form has been inconsistent, but few players in the group possess his ability to create moments from nothing.
If the USA are to make a deep run, their captain will almost certainly need to deliver.
Arda Guler (TURKIYE)
Every World Cup introduces a player who suddenly becomes a global superstar.
Arda Guler might already be too famous for that label, but the Real Madrid playmaker has all the tools to become one of the breakout stars of the tournament. His vision, passing range and left foot make him one of the most entertaining players to watch in North America.
Julio Enciso (PARAGUAY)
Paraguay’s hopes largely rest on the shoulders of their 22-year-old playmaker.
Enciso combines flair, creativity and a willingness to attempt the spectacular. In a team built around defensive discipline, he is the player tasked with providing the spark.
If Paraguay are to reach the knockouts, chances are Enciso will have played a major role.

PREDICTION
- Turkiye
- USA
- Paraguay
- Australia
This is arguably the most balanced group in the tournament.
The USA should benefit from home support and Turkiye possess too much talent to ignore, making them slight favourites to progress. Paraguay look capable of grinding out results against anyone, while Australia will fight until the very end.
Do not be surprised if qualification comes down to goal difference, or even the final few minutes of the last matchday.
Group D might not contain a traditional giant.
It could still produce some of the best drama of the entire World Cup.
