Canada’s FIFA World Cup 2026 journey came to an end with a 3-0 last-16 defeat to Morocco in Houston on July 4, Saturday, but head coach Jesse Marsch refused to let the scoreline overshadow his team’s performance. The Canadian boss said he would “rather be us than them,” insisting his players stayed true to their attacking identity despite Morocco’s clinical second-half display.

“We went after the game. We didn’t play defensively. We showed we can be better,” Marsch said after the defeat. “Of course, we have to be in these situations more and more, and then we have to find ways to succeed. But what a great team. I’d rather be us than them, as good as Morocco is. I’m really proud of our guys. They’re hurting right now, but my goodness, I couldn’t be prouder. Canada, thank you. I thank Canada.”
Canada started brightly in Houston and forced Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou into two important early saves through Jonathan David and Tani Oluwaseyi. However, Morocco took control after the break as Azzedine Ounahi scored twice before substitute Soufiane Rahimi sealed a 3-0 victory in stoppage time.
Despite the scoreline, Marsch focused on the progress Canada had made and the identity his side displayed against one of the tournament favourites.
Reflecting on Canada’s performance, Marsch added: “In the biggest games, in the biggest moments, it’s about how much we can be ourselves, how much belief we can show and how much we can put the game on our terms. We did that. We had 11 incredible performances in the first half. We were unlucky not to take the lead. Then it’s the fine details. They have quality and players who compete at the highest level, but in terms of how we played and sticking to who we wanted to be, it was an incredible performance.”
MOROCCO’S MARCH CONTINUES
Morocco once again demonstrated why they remain one of the most dangerous knockout teams in international football. After reaching the semi-finals in Qatar four years ago, Mohamed Ouahbi’s side booked another World Cup quarter-final with a clinical second-half display.
The breakthrough came in the 50th minute when Achraf Hakimi disguised a wide free-kick into the path of Ounahi, who curled a superb finish into the bottom corner. Canada continued to push for an equaliser, but Brahim Diaz sparked a devastating counter-attack that allowed Ounahi to complete his brace eight minutes from time before Rahimi added a third deep into stoppage time.
Hakimi also made history by registering his third World Cup assist, the most by any African player in the competition’s history. Ounahi became the first Moroccan player since Salaheddine Bassir in 1998 to score twice in a World Cup match, underlining Morocco’s growing pedigree on the biggest stage.
For Canada, the defeat marked the end of a memorable tournament despite extending their winless record against Morocco to five matches (one draw, four defeats). While the co-hosts bowed out, Marsch’s post-match remarks reflected a belief that Canada’s proactive approach and competitive display provide a strong foundation ahead of future major tournaments.
