Johan Manzambi announced himself on the FIFA World Cup stage in spectacular fashion as Switzerland defeated Bosnia and Herzegovina 4-1 to take control of Group B on Thursday. The 20-year-old substitute scored twice after coming off the bench to transform a tense contest into a comfortable Swiss victory in Los Angeles.
For more than 70 minutes, Switzerland looked set for another frustrating evening. Bosnia defended resolutely, limited clear-cut opportunities and kept the Swiss attack at bay despite enjoying less possession.

Just three minutes later, the youngster produced the breakthrough Switzerland had desperately been searching for, meeting a delivery with a crisp volley that finally beat the Bosnia defence and lifted the pressure on Murat Yakin’s side.
The goal opened the floodgates.
MANZAMBI CHANGES THE GAME
Switzerland had dominated large spells of the contest but lacked the cutting edge required to break down a stubborn Bosnia side.
That changed almost instantly with Manzambi’s arrival.
The Freiburg youngster, regarded as one of Europe’s brightest emerging talents after being named UEFA Europa League Revelation of the Season, injected energy and directness into the Swiss attack. His opener gave Switzerland belief, while Bosnia’s resistance began to fade.
Ruben Vargas doubled the advantage shortly afterwards as Switzerland took full control. Manzambi then capped a dream cameo by adding his second goal of the evening, effectively putting the contest beyond reach.
Bosnia did manage a late response through Ermin Mahmic, giving their travelling supporters something to celebrate, but the comeback never looked likely.
Captain Granit Xhaka completed the scoring from the penalty spot to seal an emphatic 4-1 victory that perhaps looked more comfortable on paper than it had for much of the evening.
The result was made easier by Bosnia being reduced to ten men late in the match, allowing Switzerland to exploit the extra space and finish strongly.
SWITZERLAND CLOSE IN ON THE KNOCKOUTS
For Manzambi, it was another significant milestone in a rapidly rising career.
The youngest player in Switzerland’s World Cup squad once dreamed of becoming a goalkeeper and idolised German great Manuel Neuer while growing up. Now, he is scoring crucial goals on football’s biggest stage.
His impact could prove decisive not only for Switzerland’s World Cup campaign but also for his own emergence as one of the tournament’s breakout stars.
More importantly for the Swiss, the victory puts them firmly in control of Group B. Switzerland now have four points from two matches and require just one more point from their final group-stage fixture against Canada to guarantee qualification for the Round of 32.
The sizeable winning margin could also prove crucial if qualification comes down to goal difference.
While the scoreline may have flattered Switzerland slightly given the balance of play for much of the contest, there was no doubt they deserved the three points. Their patience eventually paid off, and once the breakthrough arrived, they ruthlessly punished a tiring Bosnia side.
Switzerland will now travel to Vancouver knowing another positive result against Canada should be enough to secure a place in the knockout rounds. Bosnia, meanwhile, face a must-win encounter against Qatar if they are to keep their World Cup hopes alive.
