WHO IS WILTON SAMPAIO?
Sampaio is one of South America’s most experienced referees and has been a familiar face on the international football circuit for more than a decade.
Born in Teresina de Goias, Brazil, in 1981, the 44-year-old began officiating in Brazil’s top division in 2009 before quickly earning a reputation as one of the country’s leading referees. His performances saw him recognised among the standout officials in the Brasileirao, and he received his FIFA badge in 2013.
Since then, Sampaio has built an impressive international rsum. He has officiated in the Copa Libertadores, Copa Sudamericana, Copa America, FIFA Club World Cup and multiple World Cup qualifying campaigns.
The Brazilian was also part of FIFA’s officiating team at both the 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cups. During the Qatar tournament, he attracted significant attention following England’s quarter-final defeat to France, with several players and fans questioning some of his decisions after the match.
Known in Brazil for maintaining a strict disciplinary approach, Sampaio has regularly produced high card counts in domestic and continental competitions. His reputation for keeping tight control of matches was once again on display in Mexico City’s World Cup opener.
WHY DID WILTON SAMPAIO GO VIRAL?
Initially, the reason behind Sampaio’s viral moment had nothing to do with the red cards.
Following a star-studded opening ceremony featuring Shakira and Burna Boy, fans quickly noticed the referee wearing a large over-ear communication device connected to his microphone system. The equipment gave him a distinctly futuristic appearance and immediately became a social media talking point.
Many fans compared the setup to a gaming headset, while others joked that Sampaio looked like he had stepped straight out of the RoboCop films. The memes continued throughout the night as the referee repeatedly found himself at the centre of the action.
However, the jokes only intensified once the cards started coming out.
Sampaio went on to officiate one of the most chaotic World Cup openers in recent memory. The Brazilian referee produced three straight red cards during the contest, with South Africa’s Sphephelo Sithole dismissed shortly after half-time before teammate Themba Zwane was sent off following a VAR review for striking Roberto Alvarado in the face. Mexico defender Cesar Montes then became the third player to receive his marching orders in stoppage time after bringing down Khuliso Mudau.
IS THIS THE MOST RED CARDS IN A WORLD CUP MATCH?
Despite the drama, Mexico versus South Africa does not hold the World Cup record.
That unwanted distinction still belongs to the infamous “Battle of Nuremberg” during the 2006 FIFA World Cup.
Portugal’s round-of-16 clash against the Netherlands featured four red cards and a remarkable 16 yellow cards, making it one of the most ill-tempered matches in tournament history. Portuguese duo Costinha and Deco were sent off, while Khalid Boulahrouz and Giovanni van Bronckhorst received red cards for the Dutch.
Even so, the Mexico-South Africa opener comfortably ranks among the most chaotic World Cup matches in recent memory.
For Sampaio, it was a night that began with RoboCop jokes and ended with a three-red-card performance that ensured his name was trending worldwide long after the final whistle.
