The fallout from Argentina’s tempestuous 3-2 comeback victory over Egypt has escalated into a major diplomatic row, with the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) lodging a formal complaint with FIFA demanding the immediate expulsion of match referee Francois Letexier from the tournament.
The Pharaohs looked poised to pull off one of the greatest upsets in modern World Cup history after establishing a commanding 2-0 lead in Atlanta. However, the match turned on a series of contentious decisions by the French officiating crew, culminating in Enzo Fernndez heading a 93rd-minute winner for the South Americans, leaving the Egyptian players and staff incandescent with rage.
In a scathing official statement released on Wednesday, the Egyptian federation confirmed that its leadership had bypassed standard post-match protocols to appeal directly to football’s governing body.
“Hany Aburida, President of the Egyptian Football Federation, filed a complaint with FIFA, demanding an investigation into the French referee Francois Letexier… after the serious refereeing mistakes committed by the team of referees and double standards, which caused the Egypt team to lose the match and leave the World Cup,” Egypt federation said in a statement, according to AFP news agency.
The core of Egypt’s fury surrounds three pivotal moments. While leading 1-0, Mostafa Ziko appeared to double the Pharaohs’ advantage, only for Letexier to disallow the goal following a retrospective VAR review for a soft foul in the build-up. Later in the second half, with the score level, a seemingly blatant challenge on Mohamed Salah inside the penalty area was waved away without a second look. Finally, Egypt argued fiercely that Alexis Mac Allister committed a foul in the buildup to Argentina’s late winner.
The EFA has made it clear that they believe the omissions by the Video Assistant Referee team were deliberate.
“Aburida demanded the investigation of the entire team of referees, including the video technology referees, because of the blatant errors and insisting on not reviewing some of the footage that we believe are in favour of the Egyptian national team, and we see in it the Pharaohs’ right to a correct goal and a penalty.”

The language from Cairo has since hardened, with the EFA taking the extraordinary step of accusing the European officiating crew of inherent bias against the African nation. The federation confirmed it had “demanded the exclusion of the referee and the entire crew from the World Cup after investigating these mistakes and proving the crime of discrimination against the Egyptian national team”.
In the tunnel after the final whistle, the emotional toll on the Egyptian camp was laid bare. Members of the coaching staff had to be restrained from confronting Letexier, while several players openly wept on the pitch. The consensus within the camp was that the refereeing team succumbed to the pressure of the occasion, showing a subconscious bias towards ensuring Lionel Messi’s fairytale tournament remained alive at the expense of the underdogs.
While FIFA has acknowledged receipt of the official paperwork from the Egyptian delegation, it is highly unprecedented for the governing body to expel a referee mid-tournament unless a severe breach of integrity is proven. For Egypt, however, the protest is about establishing a marker.
Speaking to the press long after the final whistle, Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan launched a blistering attack on the integrity of the officiating, directly alleging that FIFA protected the tournament’s biggest star.
“We have not seen respect or fair play,” Hassan fumed, citing the lack of VAR reviews for a penalty shout on Mohamed Salah and a shirt-pull before Argentina’s winner.
“There seems to be pressure from the Argentina side on this outcome… FIFA favours the South American nation and wants to keep their main man and the biggest draw of the World Cup-Lionel Messi – in the competition as long as possible. I want to put it in beautiful words and say hard luck, but we have been treated unfairly and it has been an injustice.”
