It is not often that a T20 innings finds its defining passage inside the first few overs, but Gujarat Titans versus Royal Challengers Bengaluru produced exactly that in Ahmedabad. The contest may not have turned into the kind of thriller many expected, yet it offered a gripping powerplay duel when Virat Kohli and Kagiso Rabada squared off in the first innings.
GT vs RCB: HIGHLIGHTS | SCORECARD
For a brief stretch, the game narrowed into a contest between two of the best in the business. Kohli, still among the most influential batters in the IPL, took on the responsibility of setting the tempo early. Rabada, one of the finest fast bowlers of his generation, was tasked with unsettling him with pace, bounce and hard lengths. In the space of two overs, both men landed significant blows, and the innings shifted around them.
That battle gave the match its sharpest edge.
KOHLI LANDED THE FIRST BLOWS
Royal Challengers Bengaluru were without Phil Salt, the natural aggressor in their opening pair. His absence shifted the burden of early momentum onto Kohli, who is more often seen as the anchor at the top of the order. With Jacob Bethell struggling to find rhythm, Kohli took it upon himself to force the pace and make sure RCB did not drift through the powerplay.
The statement arrived immediately.
Kohli took five boundaries off Rabada’s opening over and set the tone for RCB’s start. It was the kind of burst that immediately changed the shape of the contest. Rabada came in with a clear plan, looking to hit the hard lengths that have become such a reliable method with the new ball, but Kohli read it early and committed to the counter.
Rabada’s first over drifted into the area where Kohli was ready to attack. The lengths were slightly short and close enough outside off stump for Kohli to free his hands. Once he recognised that pattern, he did not allow Rabada to settle. He trusted his hands, used the pace on offer and made sure RCB’s scoring rate stayed ahead of the game.
Cheteshwar Pujara, speaking on JioHotstar’s post-match show, summed up the opening exchange neatly.
“Virat began by striking five boundaries,” Pujara said. “On the very first delivery, he played a powerful pull shot, then cleared mid-off, and then came that superb cover drive. He shifted onto the back foot once again to play that magnificent cover drive, the shot Virat is renowned for.”
The method behind the strokeplay stood out just as much as the boundaries themselves. Kohli stayed proactive with the field, used the crease cleverly and challenged the lengths before Gujarat’s quicks could lock into rhythm. He was setting the terms of the exchange and forcing Gujarat’s lead quickly onto the back foot.
That pressure carried into the next over as well. Kohli charged down against Mohammed Siraj and found the boundary again, underlining that the intent was not limited to one over or one match-up. For a brief stretch, RCB had seized the initiative and Kohli had pushed Gujarat’s new-ball attack onto the back foot.
RABADA DELIVERED THE RESPONSE
What made the contest stand out was Rabada’s answer.
After taking the early punishment, he did not chase a dramatic change in plan. He made a precise adjustment and backed it.
Cheteshwar Pujara pointed to the correction that turned the duel.
“In the first over, the bowling was slightly short and outside off stump,” Pujara said. “But in the second over, Rabada completely altered his line. The ball before the wicket was on the stumps, and then came the back-of-a-length ball angling in. Virat was caught out because of the extra bounce Rabada generated.”
That change was enough to alter the duel.
In the first over, Rabada had operated around the fourth and fifth stump line, offering Kohli enough room to access his scoring areas. In the next, he brought Kohli closer to the stumps and tightened the margin for error. The correction was subtle, but decisive. By going straighter and then hitting the hard length again, Rabada forced Kohli into a very different shot.
Kohli advanced once more, looking to keep the pressure on, but this time Rabada had changed the question. The extra bounce rushed him, the timing was not as clean, and the mistimed stroke brought the breakthrough Gujarat needed.
Pujara called it the clearest sign of elite players adjusting in real time. Kohli had read the first move and attacked with conviction. Rabada absorbed the pressure, recalibrated and found the answer expected of a fast bowler of his class.
“It was a magnificent comeback,” Pujara said. “Virat got off to a brilliant start, but Rabada responded with an equally impressive comeback.”
In the space of two overs, Ahmedabad got a reminder of what top-level T20 cricket can still look like. Kohli landed the first blows. Rabada delivered the decisive one.
