Sarfaraz Khan became the 311th male Test cricketer from India when he received his cap from Anil Kumble before the start of the third Test at the Niranjan Shah Cricket Stadium in Rajkot on Thursday, February 15. The Mumbai batter had an eventful debut as he not only scored a 48-ball half-century in his first international innings that came in the game’s purest format but it was an emotional moment for his family who were out there for the special occasion.

Amid all this, former India head coach Ravi Shastri, who was there on air when Sarfaraz Khan began his innings, seemingly mistook Sarfaraz Khan’s wife Romana to be his mother. A clip of Shastri saying ‘his father, his mother watching the young man bat’ has gone viral on social media.

Meanwhile, Sarfaraz was run out in his first international outing. The Mumbai batter was looking really good and was batting on 62 off 66 balls when he responded to senior partner Ravindra Jadeja’s call for a run who was batting on 99. However, Jadeja said ‘no’ too late for Sarfaraz to get back to safety on time. Later, Jadeja even shared an Instagram story admitting his mistake that it was his “wrong call” that led to the debutant’s dismissal.

Recovering from 33/3 after India won the toss and elected to bat first, innings from captain Rohit Sharma (131), Jadeja and Sarfaraz ensured India end the day at 326/5 in 86.0 overs. On Day 2, India lost two early wickets of both the overnight batters Kuldeep Yadav and Jadeja (112) before the partnership between Ravichandran Ashwin and debutant Dhruv Jurel took India past 400.

The five-match series currently stands levelled at 1-1.
